j NOTES OF THE TURF. Philistia, which sold for at Lexington Tuesdav, is the dam of that good race horse, Phil Finch. It is reported that E. W. Heffner will succeed I-rank M. Taylor as trainer of the H. C. Hallen-beck stable. T. II. Gritliu, former jockey, has two ranches of 1.800 acres in California. He makes his headquarters at Oakland. Thomas H. McCreary. formerly a trainer of the thoroughbred on the New York tracks, Is now managing a ranch at Tracy, Cal. J. H. McCanens Camel, the "iron horse" of the present day, is racing again at Charleston after an absence of several months from the races. It is quite possible that the machines may be put in at Havre de Grace for the spring meeting. The revenue derived from the bookmakers is about half that which the association would have received from the miitiiels. and the Harford county promoters are beginning to wake up to that fact. Iliey have seen what the machines have done at Pimllco and Laurel in the wav of revenue, and it is hardly likely that they will be content longer with the present state of affairs. Baltimore News.
