AMERICAN JOCKEY-HAS CLOSE CALL. Now York, December 2. Mickey Miles. American jockey, who is back nt his Brooklyn home from Austria, had some thrilling war experiences before lie left that country. 31iles has been riding in Austria for the past nine years and lias become tremendously popular- with the horsemen of that country. He was leading the riders this season, and won the last race that was run in the country before the war put an end to the sport. He won that race on Tragopau, a horse that was afterward taken by the army for 1914.sh00 although his owner had previously refused an offer of ,000 for him. .Miles knowledge of horses made him of value to the Austrian army, and he was employed to in spect animals for service. While on a tour of inspection, in an automobile, he was shot from am. bush by a party of Servians. Oue bullet inflicted n wound in tlie arm and a second tore through his uniform .blouse from side to side and painfully wounded his back, though it was only tlesli deep. it was shortly after this experience that 31ile3 obtained his discharge, ami lie has the bullet-perforated blouse here with him as a souvenir of his part in the war. Incidentally, ho was promoted to a staff position and correspondingly decorated. 31iles had an excellent opportunity to observe the relative merits of horses in the war, for that was his particular province. He say that thoroughbreds in tlie senice were so far superior to all tlie other horses in service that they were in a class by themselves.
