BOXER RUNS A GAME RACE TWO-YEAR-OLD IN WATKTNS STABLE WINS STAKE AT CHARLESTON. Cliff Field Furnishes a Surprise by Beating Polly H. in Handicap Palmetto Park Patronage Shows a Gain. Charleston, S. O., December 5. R. E. Watkins two-year-old, Boxer, accounted for the Argyle Hotel Stakes, the first of the closed events to be decided at Palmetto Park this season, and his victory was a sterling one, for lie survived in game fashion a hard drive during the last quarter and outstayed Sherwood, which towered over him during the stretch racing. The two dominated the running from the start with the Hedrick representative showiivg the way by a slight margin, but the diminutive youngster clung to Sherwood in tenacious fashion and ultimately forced him to weaken. Grossbun was third. The disappointment of the race was Emerald Gem, which failed to show her usual speed at any part of the running. The victory of Boxer did not profit It. K. Watkins. On the contrary it cost him more money than the net value of the stake to retain his racer, the colt being bid up from an entered price of ,200 to ,500. J. AV. Hedrick advanced the colt by 00 bids to ,300. Then Mr. AVatkins bid ,500 and that ended the bidding. The net value of the stake was . A fairly good card was provided by Secretary Nathanson this afternoon, with the stake as head-liner and a handicap at one mile and one-sixteenth as a secondary feature. For the latter Polly II. ruled favorite, with Yenghee a strong second choice. Cliff Field, the extreme outsider, won the race and Polly II. was second. Big fields of mediocre horses ran in the remaining dashes. Ailey. the favorite, was lucky to score in the initial race. AVhile his margin was a comfortable one. Behest would have beaten him but for the failure of jockey Robinson to take the Burttschell representative through an opening when he had an opportunity to do so. Miss Jean, a frequent winner at the half mile tracks,, just managed to outstay Flying Yankee in the second aud J. B. Harrell led for the entire trip in the third race.
