AN EVER RECURRING QUESTION. The alleged deterioration or the thoroughbred has been a theme for discussion during the past hundred years, and will continue while horses exist. In Lliglnnd lifiy years ago it was productive of a deal f controversy, and the following excerpt is from the London .Sorting Life of July 2, 1851: "Lord Ialllierston said he differed from those who contended that the breed of horses had deteriorated. Ho believed that generally the breed was better than ever it was as to size, substance, power, and en-1 durance. Let any man go into a racing stable, and. seeing the bone and substance of the horses, let hiill ask himself what he would wish to see better III tii shape of a four-legged animal. The fact was. pains were now taken to bring the two-year-olds to a greater size; than formerly. If the breed of horses In tills country had deteriorated, foreigners would ji.J come here to buy Ktiglish horses."
