ENGLISH THOROUGHBREDS AT AUCTION. The December Sales of thoroughbreds of all ages and descriptions annually held at Newmarket, England, by Messrs. Tattersall. came off punctually December 1, 2 and .!. In the course of the three dayss transactions. 300 horses changed ownership for a total of 57,990. Stallions, broodmares, horses in training, yearlings and foals were disposed of. Fnder the stress of war no one expected anything like the prices realized at the December sales of the half dozen preceding years and. after all was over, there was a disposition to view the results as being in the main decidedly satisfactory. Undoubtedly many of the animals were sold much below their real value and it was a great chance for American breeders to replenish their studs cheaply. But unless some of the purchases were on commissions from this side, Frank J. Gould appears to have been the only American buyer, he taking several broodmares. The star price of the sale was brought by the three-year-old bay filly Santa Quaranta, "by St. Frusquln Widgeon, Sir Maurice Fitzgerald giving 2.S00 guineas 4,500 for her.
