Seven new American time records scored during the year speak well for the- quality of the sport with which racegoers in this country were regaled during 1914. They also speak eloquently of the constant improvement that is going on in American thoroughbred breeding as well as the advance that is continually being made in the art ot track cpnHtJpn,lpg. The distances for which new records were made are three and half furlongs, live and a half furlongs, three-quarters of a mile, one mile. oir mile and a sixteenth, one mile and an eighth and seven-eighths of a mile over the straight course. With the exception of the last named, the new records were all at distances that are constantly being run, and therefore the more significant than if they had been at the more" Infrequently run distances. During the preceding year five new American records had been made and the year before that only one. Tlie new record of 39., for three and a half furlongs stands to the credit of James Butlers two-year-old Supremacy and was made oyer the fast course at Juarez, Mex., February 1, with an impost of 115 pounds. This displaced the record of 3! made by Calisse, carrying 123 pounds, at the same track, January 17, 1911. To Jefferson Livingstons wonderfully fast six-year-old sprinter. Iron Mask, fell the distinction of making the new reeords for five and a half - furlongs and three-quarters of a mile. Both of his record-breaking feats were accomplished over the Juarez track. The new live-and-a-half furlong record Is 1:03 and was created March S, under the exacting Impost of 150 pounds. It supplanted the record of 1:04, held jointly by Bringhurst and Pan Zaretn. Bringhurst had originally made the old record at Churchill Downs. Louisville, Ky., under 92 pounds, October 8, 1013. Pan Zareta had equaled it at Juarez, December 0, and again en December 1.!, carrying 124 and 120 pounds, respectively. Iron Masks record of three-quarters In 1:09 was accomplished January 4. It superceded his own record of 1:10, made at Douglas Park, Louisville, Ky., September 23. 1913, with 127 pounds, and afterwards equaled by Leochares at the same track, October 3, 1913, with 109 pounds, and by Orb, at Juarez, December 9 following, with an Impost of 90 pounds. Oue of the most notable feats of the year was the reducing of the mile record to 1:3G. This sensational accomplishment went to the credit of R. T. Wilsons six-year-old gelding, Amalfi, carrying 107 pounds, in winning an overnight selling race in connection with the Xew York State Fair at Syracuse, September 3. This performance was made posslb!e chiefly because the track over which it was run had been prepared especially for record-breaking trotting races and was without the cushion usually provided on tracks devoted to the running horse. The record which it displaced was 1:30, made by the three-year-old lillv, Chrlstophine, with 102 pounds up, at Juarez, March 11, 1914. The Syracuse track also holds the new record of 1:42 for one mile and a sixteenth, made by G. W. Wingfields four-jc-ar-old filly, Celesta, on the same day that Ama.fi ran his record-breaking mile. Celesta carried 108 pounds and her performance took the place of the record of 1:43, jointly held by Gretna Green and Trap Rock. Gretna Green, as a Jlv0-year-old, made the old record at Fort Erie, Out., August 28, 1909, wilh 100 pounds, and Trap" Rock, when a three-year-old, duplicated the performance at the same track. Juiv 5, 1911, carrying-112. " Andrew Millers champion three-year-ohl, Roamer, is responsible for the reduction of the record for one mile and an eighth to 1:49. It was at Laurel, Md., that he did It and the late was October 10. The old record was 1:50 and had been made by Vox Popull as a four-year-old, with 110 pounds, at the Santa Anita track in California, December 19, 1908. Paris, a two-year-old Son of Ogden in the stable of John E. Madden, his breeder, reduced the seven-furlong straight course record to 1:22 in winning the forty-fourth running of the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park, X. Y., September 12. That this was a performance of transcendant merit may be deduced from the fact that it was the illustrious and unbeaten Co.In, regarded by many as the greatest of all American thoroughbreds, that held the record previously. Colin had run the distance in 1:23 In winning the same stake October 10. 1907, Iff which year he was the reigning sensation of the American turf. Colin car-litd 122 pounds when he mndethe old record and Paris had up 110. The complete list of the American records, revised to date, is embraced in the tabulation that follows: Dist. Horse. A. Wt.
