THREE-YEAR-OLDS IN BIG HANDICAPS. The victory of Wardha in the Manchester November Handicap wound up what was a remarkably good si-asou for three-year-old racers, and it may bo of interest therefore to glance through the years records of the doings of horses of this ag: in handicap events. The Lincolnshire Handicap has for a long time been "taloo" amongst owners of second-seaFon performers, and last March th-re were none of the age in the field, a statement which also applies to the Liverpool Spring Cup. So early in tho campaign, of course, three-year-olds are at a disadvantage, and only one Pankattan turned out for the Newbury Spring Cup. It was the same iu the case of the Babraham Plate at the Craven Meeting, but in this instance Cerv.il, which had won a few day earlier at Derby, carried his seven pounds penalty Into second place behind The Curragh a iverfonnanee which, in view of the later displays of Lord Cadogans colt, probably earned for Cerval the somewhat too high opinion of the hamlieappcrs. Be that as it may. Mr. McMillans chestnut failed to run up to the Craven form in any of his subsequent races. Even at Epsom Spring Meeting three-year-olds were conspicuous by their nbsence from the Held for the Great Metropolitan Stakes, while onlv two. Ciii-cinnatus and Pictorial, took part in the City and Suburban, which was- rather curious, in view of the fact of Mushrooms, success in that event at no more ancient date than 1011. During the spring, however, there are nowadays finite a number of handicaps confined to three-year-olds, and these naturally are more attractive to owners of horses of the age thnn the more valuable and important races mentioned. At Epsom Summer, however, the Eg-iiumt Plate was won by Westphalia, and the Chip-stead Plate by High and Dry. with White Aldiey second, and thereafter animals foaled iu 1011 began to hold their own to some purpos:-. The Im-perial Handicap at Lingticld June was taken by Kings Scholar, while at Newbury in the same month Eigon was only beaten a head by Iron Duke for the Empire Stakes, and Marten and Son-in-I.aw were second and third respectively to Florist for the Summer Cup. Then. art; few handicaps at Ascot, but l.le-a-Bed proved capable of accounting for the Royal Hunt Cup. Ilouiiam for the Visitors Handicap. Faufarona for the Hightweght Handicap and Mount William for the Wokingham Stakes, so that three-year-olds jnad an almost clean sweep of this class of event a at o of C c h 1 , j, f c v a s s a 1 f I t V a 1 . 1 , , , . i the great Berkshire gathering. On the last day June, at Carlisle, Wardha, by carrying olf the Cumberland Plate, gave a foretaste of what was to come at Manchester at the end of the campaign, and on the same day, at headquarters. Gum Shoe figured as runner-up to Warlingham for the Hare Park Handicap, while Daly Girl hunted Short Grass home for the London Cup at Alexandra Park on the last afternoon of the week. The Forest was a comfortable winner of the St. Albans Handicap at Nottingham, and Boots an equally easy victor in the Old Newton Cup at Haydock Park. Warlingham, whose Newmarket success I have just alluded to, also won the two miles Summer Handicap at the Second July meeting, but only after a desperate set-to with Naughty Girl, and later in the week, although this does not come within the category of handcaps, three-year-olds monopolized the placings for the rich Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park. Next wo hud Coronis carrying off the Molyneux Plate at Liverpool, Collodion the Goodwood Plate, Abokir .the Brighton Stakes, and Red Finch run n in apprentice to a neck for the ,000 County Hamuclip at Gatwick. This brings us to the autumn, aud while the Ascot Gold Cup second, Willbrook, went one better by cap turlng the Doneaster Cup, the second and third -.Mariano and Boots to Redwood for the Great York shire Handicap were three-year-olds, as also wer-the hero of the popular Portland Handicap, Plying Orb, and Siller, which won the Town Moor Handi cap by a half dozen lengths from Saint Cyr. On his favorite Windsor course The Forest captured tho Royal Borough Handicap, and soon afterwards came Troubadours unexpected victory in the Cesare-witcli, for which he was followed home by Green Falcon, of the same age. Again in the Cambridgeshire did the three-year-olds prevail, Honeywood anl Ambassador finishing first and second after a terrific tussle with Diadumenos aud Cheerful. The Grant Tom Plate at Lincoln fell to Polycrates, and ai tlwugh the three-year-olds missed the Liverpool Clip Williams Pride took up the thread in the Demy Cup, leaving Wardha to wind up a wonderfully good year for the representatives of their age at Maj Chester.
