CHEAPER RACERS IN ACTION CHARLESTON CARD GIVEN OVER TO SELLING PLATERS OF MEDIOCRE CLASS. Wintry Conditions Again Prevail at Palmetto Park and Racing Goes On Over a Course That Is Fetlock Deep in Sloppy Mud. Charleston, S. C, December 2S. Wintry weather , prevailed at Palmetto Park this afternoon, hiit despite the inclement conditions a large Monday crowd was on hand to witness the running of the card. Well balanced fields faced the starter and keenly contested finishes marked the greater part of the program. The heavy rain that fell over Sunday turned the track into a quagmire, fetlock deep iu slop. Xo special feature was down for decision and mediocre horses went to the post in all the races. In the opening scramble of the afternoon, over the five and a half furlong course, F. A. Herolds Miss Frances managed to beat a small band of lion-wlnners by a small margin. The winner was a pro-pounced favorite throughout the speculation and was coupled with Lady Bryn. In the second race J. H. Barr, heavily backed, was returned the winner in easy fashion. He was ridden by Oliert and drew out in the final furlong. His victory was a hard blow to the layers. In the, following rate R. P. Dodson scored with Martre. capably handled by Peak. The winner was always well supported and won well in hand from Priwer and Hildas Brother. Another favorite scored in the fifth race in Ilypatia. The closest, finish of the day came with the running of the final race in which Jacob Bunn got up in the closing strides to nose out Benedictlna. The winner closed with a sensational burst of speed. Jockey Fred Coleman made his reappearance in the saddle this afternoon after having been out of the saddle since the Havre de Grace meeting. A. G. Blakeley made a handsome offer for the boys contract for the meeting at Havana, hut J. G. Wagnon declined the terms offered and will take the boy to Xew Orleans. The lirst of the special trains carrying horses to Xew Orleans departed this afternoon. The shipment comprised nine horse cars and two sleepers. Others will leave tomorrow, for which a large jele gation has reserved accommodations. Jockey E. Pool, who heads the list of riderf here, will accompany the. stable of J. A. Gibsonto the Crescent City tomorrow. , J The stables of J. S. Ownbey and R. B-Stelle departed for Havana this afternoon.
