IMPORTANCE OF THE THOROUGHBRED In a statement made in New York a few days ago August Belmont said saidThe The importance of racing in the United States can not be overestimated Without it that type of horse which experts the world over pronounce the most perfect for the upbuilding of our general horse product would disappear European countries have long known the worth of the thoroughbred sire and they have bred to him because they wanted in their common horses the courage quality stamina and other qualifications which are characteristic of the blooded horse everywhere Racing gives a chance to eliminate the unsound and imperfect and the sport is encouraged in every country where horse breeding has been reduced to a science notably iu France Germany and AustroIIungary where fabu ¬ lous sums are expended in the upkeep of breeding studs which are subsidized by these governments Many governmentsMany think that our government might prosecute tliis important work with more vigor than it has in the past but I am one of those who think that the government has been making baste slowly That tilings will move much more rapidly as soon as the breeders of the country became thoroughly alive to their opportunities is certain Euro e is bound to need horses in vast numbers when this war is over and the United States will be overrun with buyers who will not be satisfied with anything but the besr Outside of the cavalry remount and artillery horses taken in such vast numbers by Europeans In the last few months the purchases of horses in the States have iu the past dcRidu been mainly confined to our standardbred or trotting stock That only the best sires and dams with fast track records were wanted is enlightening It shows the tendency of the times and points unerringly to the methods by which success lias been achieved abroad abroadIt It behooves us to be awake when the call comes The successful merchant always has the goods when his customer calls
