GENERAL NEWS NOTES OF THE DAY A Berlin dispatch of yesterday says A de ¬ cisive battle from which important rcstilts are ex ¬ pected is now in progress all along the Russian front German forces a Ions the Rawka river central Russian Poland west of Warsaw have now taken the offensive The German battle line in Poland Galicia and ISiikowiim is 082 miles long German and Austrian forces are attacking the onemy in a decisive battle and bit results are expected Special dispatches from the Aus ¬ trian headquarters report that the Teutonic allies are pushing the Russians vigorously from the San river to the Bessarabia frontier The latest opera ¬ tions are said to have resulted in bringing General Mackensens forces in contact with General Llnsin gen and General Pflanzer Heavy fighting is pro ¬ ceeding along the whole line in Galicia but the maximum apparently has not yet been reached The Russians are bringing all their available forces consisting partly of fresh recruits to resist the advance of the Germanic allies alliesItalian Italian successes at various points on the battle line are claimed in an otticial statement issued yesterday at the war office in Rome which says Fighting to our advantage is reported from all along the front notably at Seugnalorta and Bren tonico In the Adlge valley at Fedaja pass and Montcpiaiio in Cadore along the line of crests from Valle Piccolo to Valle Grande in Carnia where the enemy has redoubled his efforts in the last few days and at certain points along the Isotizo where our troops are making secure suc ¬ cesses already obtained Especial importance at ¬ taches to the action developed in the Monte Nero zone by our Alpine troops to whom had been in ¬ trusted the task of dislodging the enemy from ambushes along the rocks which buttress the sum ¬ mit on the northern side It was begun at night by a daring and difiienlt escalade of the crags The action was continued at dawn by impetuous attacks which were crowned with complete suc ¬ cess cessJames James Kirby international president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America reached Chicago yesterday to cooperate with Mayor Thompson in his movement for peace in the strike of 10000 carpenters which has kept 125000 men in the building trades out of work Rusliing here from Indianapolis in response to a telegram sent by the mayor Mr Kirby held a hur ¬ ried conference with labor leaders and then at ¬ tended a session with his colleagues on the Iward of arbitration appointed to settle the carpenters strike He conferred with Charles W Gindele arbitrator for the contractors and Joseph K Lind quist umpire of the board In a session of the board in the otlices of the Central Trust Com ¬ pany The mayor said he was considering the plan of getting the labor leaders and contractors in an allnight conference of the kind that settled the street car strike strikeFrom From Geneva Switzerland a dispatch of yester ¬ day says News dispatches reaching Geneva from Friderichshafen set forth that double shifts are now working in the Zeppelin airship factories which are turning out a completed Zeppelin airship every twenty days One of the two Zep elins destined for operations against Italy was sent away from Friedrichshafen yesterday to replace the dirigible destroyed over Belgium recently by the Canadian aviator Warneford It is reported in Geneva that the German authorities are preparing for an im ¬ portant combined raid of Zeppelins and aeroplanes on Paris ami London in retaliation for the recent attack on German towns by aviators of the allies alliesA A Montreal dispatch of yesterday says The Canadian Pacific liner Montfort arrived here last night and its olljeers reported that the steamer was attacked by a submarine when one day out from Avonnioiith England The Montforts men feared they were due for destruction but the eteamer Honiara came up in the nick of time and shelled the submarine causing it to dive Before it dared to come up again the Canadian Pacific steamer escaped So hard did the engineers push the Montfort that its machinery broke down the next day Consequently it took seventeen days for the voyage ordinarily made in ten tenThe The French war otlice yesterday afternoon gave out a statement on the progress of hoslilties which reads as follows In the Vosges the progress made by us yesterday rendered us complete
