M. LEACH 4, 4. 1 The value of Hie solid Castleton foundation was never more apparent than it is today. Last week, when dlsari tlat " • pedigree of the Sanfonl Memorial winner, Borne, 1 drew attention to the fact thai Mr. Iariishs colt was an out and out asl hton-bred c.nc as is Dominant, which last Saturday scored such handsome victorj in the Saratoga Special. Dominant also had proved the victor, earlier iii the meeting. of the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, defeating the western champion. Dulse, pointless, and Dominant mast row be considered the best two-year-old shown ibis -mmhi. Dominants sire, Delhi, is a son of Den Brush and Viva, by Mortimer, and holds his court at Price •* MeKlnneys IckUffe Stud, this county. Delhi, though not the most attractive horse in the world to look a;, enjoyed a more than ordinary racing career when carrying the while and blue spots of the late James " .:. Keene, won upwards .t 15,000 diirine, his racing career ami carried off such important races as flu J1 in Belmont, Withers. Jreat Kopublh- Stakes and the Saratoga Derby in his three ear-old days and won the ■ Brooklyn Handicap a year later. Delhi, despite his great racing merit, up until the present has not made :! a •ny great headway as a sire, of coarse he is the sire of Oatram, winner of a Lincolnshire Handicap, and 1 ot Lahore, and. though he may occasionally send some high class colts and fillies to the races. Delhi, in my r# opinion at least, will never rank as a tirst-elass sire. My reasons are that Delhi, in conformation, falls far J snort of my beau ideal of what a stallion really should he and that his pedigree on both sides of the house J discloses the introduction of some obscure American strains. Den Brash, though unable to control the J individuality of Delhi, has nevertheless proved strong enough to impart the dark coloring, and this in spite J of Nevas being a Chestnut daughter of a chestnut sire out of a giay mare. A point, however, in Delhis i favor is that in bis top crosses his pedigree shows an admirable blending of the three great lines of Herod. . Matchem and Eclipse. Den Brash is an Eclipse. Mortemer a Herod and Australian, sire of Lizzie Lucas, a i Matchem, then Glencoe, Herod again. After this, however, all inn into Grey Eagle and hfedoe, which in trodocea the native strains and these cross, s ,,f ohscure lines certainly do not tend to enhance Delhis J chances of success at the stud. The special branch of the No. 4 family, which traces by the way of the imported Cnh mare to the Imyton BaA, from which Delhi is descended, although productive of famous . race horaea and prolific brood mares, has not been responsible for the production of any really good slal , Ii. ns. if we except Falsetto and possibly Morello. Doininant is a production of the union of the two great 1 houses of Bonnie Scotland and imported Eclipse, two of tie- few stallions which have proved themselves . stroug enough to establish lines of their own in this country. Eclipse, as we all know, was the sire of 1 Alarm, and this Alarm blood in Dominoes is rinelv returned lo the Alarm in Den Brush. , Editha, Dominants grandaili. is a sister lo the Derby winner. Melton. Sysonhys sjr,., and is the dam also of Hurst Park iiil that fleet filly. Pope Joan. Master Kihiare. Kdilhas sire, comes of a free line to j Stockwell and is out of Silk, by Plum Padding, by the Herod horse. Sweetmeat. Master Kildarc. by the way though his stud reputation r sts almost Mdely on his having got Melton, was no stoach of a race , horse winning in England the Kemplon lark up. the Liverpool Autumn up and the City and Suburban carrying 128 pounds. Violet Melrose, tie third dam. was a -]..,.,. ,,, Murninn. hy Scottish Chief, which 1 uoi the dams of the three Derby winners. Common. Donovan and Melton. Next comes Violet, hv Thorm-snby a sister to Feronia. dam of St. Serf and grnndam of Ayrshire. Without a doubt this particular branch of the No. 8 family is one of the best to be had. for it is productive, not only of great race horses, 1 but of famous sires and good brood mares as well, and no less than three winners of the Futurity, Sweep ] Novelty and Masketto. have sprung from this line in recent years. Never yet have I been afforded the o ance" to look over Dominant, which was sold as a weanling at the dispersal sale 1 I the Castleton Stud j Alien I was away in Australia. 1 am informed, however, that many good judges pronounced the Special I 1 winner to be the most promising weanling sold at the sale, and of a certainty Dominant in no way lias * i.elied the good opinions then formed of him. , knottier meeting, or as I suppose we snould say in these warlike tunes, a resumption of hostilities between ■ the two cracks. Dulse and Dominant, would create a vast amount of interest and it is to be hoped I that these two tastleionbr.d youngsters may measure swords once again before the meeting at the Spa is I brought to a cl.se. Whatever the result, though I am inclined to favor the chances of the Delhi colt They • 1 are Imth high elass, well bred youngsters, and it is difficult, as judged on blood lines, to pick and choose hit ween them.
