BUT CLOSE FINISHES MARK SOME OF THE RACES. Hodge an Easy Victor in the George Hendrie Memorial Handicap— Sir Edgar and Semper Stalwart Win by Inches. Detroit, Mich.. August 21.— The Jeorge Hendrie Memorial Handicap was provided as an attraction tor the closing day of the Windsor Jockey Clubs meeting. It brought out a small field and resulted an easy victory for Hodge, which won in a cantor by a couple of lengths from Rarnegat. There was uellcircnlated tip on the latter and he ran a poor race. He was a distant trailer iu the early running and never got to striding freely until the race was practically over. The racing was marred by intermittent showers and a mudildv track. Rain fell pretty much all night and the going was deep. Withdrawals were numerous, but keen, contests attended a majority of the finishes. In the opener Sir Edgar just managed to get up in time to beat bd Howard hy a nose, and in the third Semper Stalwart s margin over Red Cross was BO small that the winner was in doubt until the official placing was displayed. Previous to the races. Joseph McLennan, clerk of Hie scales, was presented with a handsome gold chain and diamond studded locket, tlu- gift of the horsemen. The presentation was made hv John Brans, one of the old guard, who will he remembered as I he owner of Wire Crass, a gelding that raced on the eastern tracks souk- v.-ars ago. Howard dots sold the maiden I-enavaal to Sam Louis during the afternoon. With the close ot Hi.- Windsor meeting will come a scattering of horsemen. A majority of the stables will be shipped to either Ottawa or Montreal, while some will leave for Havre de Grace and Others for Kentucky. William Walker and K. L. Bresler departed for Ottawa immediately following the close of the races tliis; afternoon. ;. W. Scott and A. L. Austin go to Bine Bonnets and C. K. .Moore anil W R. Sam Luiis this morning purchased at private sale the plater Laird 0* Kirkcaldy from II. B. llar-bourt. Privet Petal came out of his race vesterdav badly cut in several places. The two-year-old Voses in the same stable, bowed a tendon in his recent race. Moss- ]o, one .f the Canadian breds in the Iy- ment stable, grabbed himself while being schooled a I the barrier.
