This is accounted for entirely by the abandonment of racing in the far northwest, where last year the British Columbia Thoroughbred Association paid to winning owners the respectable aggregate of 45,050. In central and eastern Canada the Windsor Jockey Club. Niagara Racing Association, Hamilton Jockey Club. .Montreal Driving Club and Metropolitan Racing Association all paid more money to owners than in the preceding year, but in no case was the increase of any* great sum. On the other hand the Ontario Jockey Club. Montreal Jockey Club. Connaugbt Park Jockey Club. Dorval Park Jockey Club, Toronto Driving Club and King Edward Park Jockey Club all fell off in disbursements to owners, Dorval Park showing a quite remarkable decrease. 1 These losses were something more than made up by the money distributed at the newly-established tracks of the Maisonneuve Park Jockey Club and the Back River Jickey Club. Dorval Park was a money loser, but the other Canadian racing organizations prospered, some of them • lo an extent without precedent in their history. The heavy exactions from Canada du account of its contributions in men and treasure to the mother country in the prosecution of the great war might reasonably have Itecn Hjwilld to curtail racing receipts, but such did not prove to lie the case. The Windsor Jockey Club, in particular, throve prodigously. while Toronto. Hamilton, Fort Erie and Blue Bonnets also pros-I ered exceedingly. This was all so largely due to profits from the mutuels that in 1915 every mile track in Canada will depend upon the machines for such revenues as come from the speculative side of racing. This is so manifestly business wisdom that even Dorval Park is likely to reap a profit next year as a result of changing from tin- hooks to the more jtopular pari-mutuels.
