, , ! [ ; ! 1 1 I ■ r ■fr ■ * RICH PRODUCT OF THE YEAR FROM THE KENTUCKY RACING FIELD + , * Nothing is better known in the turf world or better established in security, popular favor and ptos-p rity than racing over the Kentucky tracks, since the statute was enacted which placed them under the intr« l and guidance of the Kentucky State Racing Commission. That body has directed its government in the paths of wisdom and conservatism. No doubt the immediate officials of the various tracks felt inwardly that the reins have been drawn too tightly in the matter of number of days allotted for racing, but on the whole results have vindicated the general course of the commission. The abounding present prosperity of the Kentucky tracks and their importance as a part of the general racing fabric were simply unknown quantities in their history prior to the advent of the State Racing Commission and the substitution of the pari-inutucls for all other methods of betting. That horsemen have shared in the increased receipts of the tracks is shown quite conclusively by the steady advance from the total of $.153,099 distributed among owners of winning horses to the much greater total of 07,731 this year. It will be quite in accordance with the spirit of the time to anticipate still hotter things in store for owners in the racing of 1916. It will be observed that Churchill Downs has led in daily distribution in all the years embraced in the following tabulation, but the older track was closely pressed this year by both Douglas Dark and Latotiia. The following particulars of the steadily increasing output of the Kentucky racing field cannot fail to interest patrons of the turf: 1 o= os o— m2 erg. £~ Ui-: o— p 3 ■ tL "o S S U It =E 3 4 » 3 :?so P U §2 H U U Track and Meeting. • 5* |! gg gf* i : " i : :l | I ? § g Sg Latonia Spring Meeting! 24 107 137 241 46,980 62 32 74 13 14 .37 I.atonia Autumn Meeting I 10 112 111 194 87,2N9 42 23 47 10 lO .37 llVttglas Dark tSpring Meeting 13 91 99 173 84,273 39 18 34 9 12 .43 Churchill Downs Spring Meeting 12 84 102 106 81.3HO 30 22 32 7 5 .36 ; L,xington Spring Mii-ting 12 75 89 150 49,133 28 19 2S 12 8 .37 Douglas Dark Autumn Meeting 8 50 77 124 43,050 23 11 22 3 1 .41 Churchill Downs i Autumn Meeting S 50 83 124 42,105 17 17 22 5 0 .30 Lexington Autumn Meeting • ■ 79 123 32,950 23 14 25 lO 10 .39 1 Totals and Grand Dercentage 102 703 ... .. 07,731 204 150 284 09 60 .38 1 ; *Dcad heat. McDowell being the fortunate man. It is a singularity of his career in racing that through a number of years it has fell to him to he in |K ssession of a high-class mare and this year Star Jasmine played the role of mainstay of his stable, as Kings Daughter did imuiedi- atelv before her. However, he had other fleet-footed horses which contributed to his satisfactory total of 6,249. Next to him came the eastern owner, L. S. Thompson, who gave Kentuckians an oppor-r t unity to see such superb creatures as Regret and Iiorrow in action, to his profit and their pleasure. John W. Schorr achieved n measure of success de-" nied to him in other fields of racing and brought up in third place with a slightly greater sum won than fell to Jefferson Livingston. W. II. Baker, W. J. However, leg infirmity enforced his early retirement from racing. Mm Dermis was a shade better than a useful handicap horse and Star Jasmine and Waterblossoin were title mares.
