Celto Defeats Naushon in an Interesting Finish in the Main Race of the Afternoon — Heavy Shipments of Horses for Havana Today. Baltimore. Md.. November 15. — Bowie offered as a feature race this afternoon an all-aged handicap at one mile. It brought a well-balanced field to the post and furnished an interesting contest with tin- winner turning up in Celt*, which beat Naushon less than a length after a long and hard stretch drive. It was the first victory that Dr. J. S. Tyree has scored in some weeks. Turner rode a good race on the filly, nursing her along in the early running for a final effort when the deciding drive came. There was a decided change in weather conditions, a cold, raw wind blowing up the track during the morning. Wraps and top coats were a omfort lather than a burden. The track was muddy from yesterdays rain, but kept drying out as the afternocn progressed. Phil Mttsgrave was forced to stand a 00 raise, after his sprinter Joe Blair had won the third race. Joe Blair made all the iiace and won by a comfortable margin. W. C. Capps and George P. Sherman advanced him from 00 to K , at which figure he was bought in. Brandywine tame out of his race lame. The horse struck himself during the race, but trainer James Arthur has hopes that the injury is not of a serious nature. Charles Lansdale. who will act as one of the stewards ut the Havana track, was au arrival from Cincinnati this morning and will remain over for several days. lb- received a cablegram to the effect that the horses recently shipped from Ken- tueky had arrived safely in Havana. Mr. Lansdale predicts a great meeting in Cuba next winter. E. K. Brysou has purchased the plater Scorpii from J. O. Talbott. Mr. Talbott has fired Gino. Slumber II.. Night Stick and Vermont and they have l.i eii laid by for the year. Ten Point will stand at j. S. Barbees farm and Cock o the Walk at H. P. Headleys. The first big shipment of horses for Havana will leave tomorrow, and will consist of six carloads. In the consignment are the horses of J. G. Watrnon, J. 0. Burttschell. W. C. Westmoreland. G. E. Ridge J. Strite, W. Gargan, II Herdel. R. D. Carter, W. B. Smith. T. Cheek, J. OBrien. M. J. Daly, Dr. F. W. Ashe. George Swain. W. Fenchter and part of the stables of H. G. Bedwell and J. S. Own- bey. This shipment will lie joined at Benuing by the horses of T. Christ, who will ship his string from Evans City, Pa., and those of X. B. Plunkett. who ...%- us Horses at Benning all ready. Phil Musgrave lost All Smiles out of the fifth race Saturday when, after finishing third, he was claimed by George Phillips for 2,300. H. T. Griffin, who some years ago. played an im-f! portant part on the American turf, is contemplating returning to racing and it is probable that his silks will be shown oil a considerable string next year. In a recent letter to Phil Musgrave he signi-i fled such an intention. Charles W. Lewis, well known to Tacing folk and at one time conected with the Kasig-Tipton Company of Xew York, is dangerously ill in Balti- more and it is feared he will not recover. A considerable delegation left Baltimore last night for El Paso to lie present at the opening of the Juarez meeting on Thanksgiving Dav. In the party were Jack Atkin. Mr. and Mrs. William Moseley. Seymour Yeiller. John P. SIcIneruey, James W»-st, Joseph Gibson and John Driscoll. P. T. Chinn will tomorrow ship to Kentucky the English two-year-olds that raced so well for Jeffer-o son Livingston during the Maryland meetings. They will be sent to Walter S. Paynes farm near Lex-o Ington. In the same shipmeut will go the stallions Ten Point and Cock o" the Walk.
