He married Miss Mvrtie Darkness, a daughter of the late L. V. Darkness, who left an immense fortune, her share of which was said to lie in the neighborhood of 0,000,000. The Walnut Hall estate in Kentucky, the home of many trotters and pacers of note br.-d by the late Mr. Darkness, will probably have an enclosure set apart for the thoroughbreds in the future, now that Mr. Ma otiihcr has turned his attention in their direction. The case involving the lease to a fair as-otia-ti.jn of the Empire City track is to be beard tomorrow at White Plains. The stables have been used for army remounts for the war and charges were made that the buildings had l een so affected l.v disease from the kMM quartered in them that Ihe would Im- dangerous t.. thoroughbreds. Hie Empire Citv ra.-e meeting was transferred this year to Belmont Park, owing to this belief. The lessees now seek relief by having the lease, which •till has several years to run, declared, void.
