Sir William Johnson Defeats Lohensrrin in a Close Finish — Pontefract Effects a Surprise in the Dixie Handicap — Track Talk. Baltimore. Mil.. Nov. 30.— The closing day of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Associations meer-ing brought out a large gathering at the Bowie course. The club offered a good program, with the Dixie Selling Handicap and a selling race at one mile and twenty yards as tlie features. The latte-was run as the fourth race and furnished a stirring finish in which Sir William Johnson just managed to last long enough to ln-at Lohengrin by a nose. Lohengrin came from behind in the stretch and at the finish was going fast and would hav; beaten the winner in another stride. The Dixie Handicap also furnished an exciting contest. Ponofract coming from the rear di isiou in the last sixteenth and finishing with a rush, got np to beat Between Is by a scant length. At various stages of the racing. Water Lily. Between Is and True Steel all seemed liked the probable winner. These three raced each other into exhaustion in tlie early running and when Pontefact made his effort in the last sixteenth they were helpless. John Shields will ship seven horses to Tia Joana Thursday. In the band he will take some for Paul Powers and some for his brother, William Shields. W. R. Mizell has had Robert Bradley gelded in the hope that it may improve his disposition. He will be left at the Bowie track during the winter in charge of James Arthurs foreman, who will remain here to look after Water Lady. Tactics aud Brandywine. The latter has been fired in the hope that he will come around in condition for racing next spring. James Milton and Harry White will remain at Bowie for the next few days, looking after shipments of tlie horses that are going to Cuba. Continued good reports, that are being sent up by horsemen already on the grounds at Oriental Park, have resulted in many horsemen deciding to race at the Havana track. James Fitzsimmons has shipped Holiday back to his owner, Archibald Barklie, at Wayne, Pa. Joseph McLennan left for Chicago tonight. Starter Dade departed for his home in Kentucky to spend a few days and Herman P. Conklin left for New York. All three of them will go to New Orleans shortly. Judge Joseph A. Murphy left for New Orleans tonight to take tip his duties with the Business Mens Racing Association there. Three carloads of horses left for Havana this morning. In the consignment went Harry Shaw and Lily Orme, from the stable of John Powers. W. C. Capps has decided to winter Monty Fox and Freda Johnson at Bowie. He will visit for a short time at his homo at Reelfoot Lake. Tenn.. and later will spend a long holiday with G. R. Bryan in Florida. A. Williams will ship his string to Kentucky where he will winter. W. L. Oliver will leave tomorrow for Lakewood. N. J., where his horses will go into winter retirement. A division of the stable will be sent to New Orleans in the care of Fred Foster. P. S. P. Randolphs True as Steel will also go to Lakewood.
