* _ __ , BROODMARES BROUGHT THE BIG PRICES AT THE RECENT NEWMARKET DECEMBER SALES t One feature of the recent Newmarket December sales was the absence of the customary army of continental buyers intent of picking up bargains. The Great War necessarily precluded their presence, but a few buyers from France and Italy were in attendance. No Russians wete in the crowd, but purchases on Russian account were made by The British Bloodstock Agency, W. Allison and possibly others. In fact, there was much buying through agents, some cm American orders. It is not easy to define American purchases. They were extensive ami valuable. Tom Welsh gave 9,104 tor nine grandly-bred broodmares and a yearling by Colin — -Acelot. Presumably they were bought for Mr. Widener. At any rate it is said only one of them would come to America, the others going to France. W. F. Smith bought six-, , teen broodmares. It is supposed Unit most, if not all of them will turn up in the possession at Mr. John Sauford. All of these and the inares bought by Welsh had been mated with the most fashionable sires of the day and were presumptively in foal. The Smith purchases called for an outlay of 9,500. Nearly all of these mares were young and right at the outset of their careers as broodmares. Joseph Butters, The British Bloodstock Agency and Mr. Allison bought for Americans, but just for whom has not been disclosed. One of the purchases by the British Bloodstock Agency was of the nine-year-old mare Baronne, by Melton — Baroness La Fleche, for J. N. Camden of Lexington, Ky. She was mated with Valens. The good sellers were the broodmares. Stallions and horses iu training, as a rule, brought small sums. The top price of the sale was hB10,120, which Mr. James Buchanan paid for the Cyllene mare Bellavista.
