Some who claim to be in the "know" state positively that the machines will be here by January 1 and that they will be put in oiieration immediately if Colonel Applegate does not renew his contract with the Jockey Club Juarez. Conning Tower has demonstrated his siqieriority over all other sprinters hero this winter. live times he has been to the barrier, and each time he has shown his opponents the shortest way home. The son of Yankee has now won fifteen races. and his own°r, C. H. Shilling,, the former race rider. states that he will try his best to win one more race before January 1. in an effort to eclipse the record of Pan Zareta, which has won fifteen races this year. Conning Tower lias always shown a fondness for the Juarez course, but this year he runs like a real sprinter. Owner Shilling states that the son of Yankee is not a long route horse. but does not think there is a thoroughbred on the track which can beat hlin at three-quarters. Phil Musgrave. another great race rider in his day, also owns a rather shifty sprinter. Mtisgrave is training Joe Blair, the "hush hor«e." which last winter engaged in a sensational match race with Pan Zareta. Joe finished second in that race and did not do much out east, but at Juarez hsj is at home. Musgrnve has announced his willingness to match Joe Blair against Conning Tower at five-eighths, but it is not likely that anvthng will eonie of his offer as owner Shilling desires the race to be at three-quarters.
