BAIS SPOILS THE CARD DOWNPOUR LEADS TO SCRATCHING OF GOOD HORSES NAMED TO GO AT NEW ORLEANS. Dick Williams Defeats Grumpy and Eagle in the Chief Race of the Day — Mr. Schorr Takes Two Races — Garner in Form. New Orleans, La., January 22.— What otherwise Would have been one of the best racing offerings of the Kair Grounds meeting ma marred bv ■ heavy downpour of rain last night, which left" the track muddy and was responsible for the riddling of the card by scratches. The attendance, however, was up 1.1 Hi.- hot Satordajr standard and included many nut.. hie persons. All the races suffered by withdrawals, the features particularly so. The Granewald Hotel Handicap was contested by ooly three starters. Indolence. Celeata and cliff Held betas scratched. The Texaa Handicap at three-quarters only had four to go because of the scratcbiag of ran Zareta, Heater 1iyiine and Tokay. The other races, excepting the fifth, also bad limited fields, but the contests afforded wholesome entertainment for the big throng. The Granewald Handicap fell to Dick Williams. lie was by far the best, but was neglected in favor of Grumpy. The latter showed a good performance and might have won but for Eagle racing with him at a fast paca for three-quarters. He took second place only because Eagle swerved badly in the last sixteenth. It was the third straight victory that Dick Williams has scored here. .Marion Goosby cantered home before the others in the splinting handicap, with Carbide in second place and Haoovia, bard driven, following. Jockey Motts overeonfidence, near the end of the second race, brought about Surpassing defeat bv orange, the latter getting up in the last stride to win. Al that Surpassing may have been a trifle abort, lor he tiled unexpectedly. Knoelet had scant disposition in the opening race, mainlv bttaaat of MoCloskcys delayed effort OB El Iato until the i.o • was virtually over.
