e « i- _ -1 • t u — B WHERE TAXATION LOST MONEY. The best inteutioned seheaaea or taxation often work ..ut differently from anticipations, as witne-s this case related by The Sydney Referee: "A little while back the Syduey •poiiy clubs derid.il to toatllhate 200 pounds a meeting to patriotic funds during the continuance of the war. That sum has been paid for some weeks, but. as the clubs under the latest taxation, have to pay to the -"overnnienf one-fourth of the amount obey receive in bookmakers fees, it is understood thev have decided to withdraw their patriotic coatri-bution. The latter would have amounted to 14.400 pounds annually, whereas the sum thev will pay as portion of the bookmakers fees will come to something between 9.000 pounds and 10.000 pounds. From this it will be seon that the new order Of things, while denriving the patriotic funds of a lot of money, will improve matters financially for the clubs."
