GENERAL NEWS NOTES OF THE DAY. A London dispatch of yesterday says: Seven of Europes cables to America have been mysteriously put out of business. They are lying at the bottom of the ocean, temporarily useless, while the remaining ones are overburdened with the great mass of communications pa-sing daily between the two continents. Satisfactory information is unobtainable here, but is was rumored today that a new type of German submarines, equipped for cable cutting, may be working off Europes western const. Two French cables, stretching from Brest lor 3,000 miles to Cape M and Miquelon. it is rumored, have been snipped off the French coast. Several other lines working from Ireland to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, over which much of the business between Ixindon and American cities passes, arc reported to have been cut. The possibility that Europe m.ght lose all direct cable coin-monii ation with America, if the rumors prove to be well founded, is not remote. Charles B. Mtiuday. convicted head of the La Salle Stret t Trust and Savings Bank, is in Chicago, enjoying freedom gained through a writ of supersedeas, which suspended his live -year sentence for conspiracy, pending an appeal. The banker furnished f 15.000 bond, sign.-d by himself, Richard Curtail ani Cchard Curran, Jr.. of Chicago. Mundays appeal is set for the April term of the Appelate court, but because of the mass of business on the docket. It is likely that the case will not come up for review before October or November. Every one aboard the Appam except the prise , officer and members of the prize crew will be permitted to land whenever they desire, it was decided late yesterday, says a Newport News dispatch. Included among those to be released are . the twelve British subjects whom the German commander sought to hold as military prisoners because they had been gun pointers on British merchant men taken by the raiders.
