CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. William A. Plnkertou is enjoying the racing at the New Orleans Fair li rounds. J. B. Atkin. well-known California bookmaker, has arrived al New Orleans from Tijuana. There is a report that the horses of II. B. Duryeu, soon to arrive from France and England, are to be raced under lease in this country. James Blute. well-known trainer, has signed a contract to train a string of thoroughbreds for a wealthy Philadolphian this season. Max Hirsch has shipped to Benning the two-year-old lilly by Hessian, which he sold to W. Shields, where the Shields horses are being prepared for spring raeing. James McDonald has taken up Peaceful Star and Burglar, which were wintering at Westbury. and transferred them to Iravesend, where they will be in charge of trainer John Whalen. The horses of c. Buxton. C. W. Hasser and W. I.. Stantiold have reached Los Angeles from Tijuana and will be Shipped from there to Ixuisville to await the opening of the Kentucky racing season. Trainer James McLaughlin says last years disappointment, Watercress II.. has wintered extremely well and is now a big and handsome three-year-old, which he hopes will turn out to be a real racer this year. A. Mel.. Earleeker is busily engaged with his stakes for the Saratoga meeting., and it is intended to lmve them announced within a few days. It is the intention to materially increase the value of s-ino of the fixtures. Preparations and rehearsals for the race track minstrel show at .New Orleans are going forward busily and a receipt of at least .i 00 is anticipated. The money will go to the tuberculosis branch of the Charity Hospital. A small shipment of thoroughbreds, imported for the Brownleigh Park Stable, was landed in Brooklyn Tuesday and immediately sent to iravesend. where the new comers Joined the other member, of that string in charge of trainer D. K. McDaniel. Former jockey Paul J. Fox has at tiraveseud the chestnut gelding Royalty. This is a rather striking looking horse, as besides being a peculiarly bright golden chestnut, he is liberally marked with white. At Saratoga last rammer this fellow hit himself in a race and it was thought that he was ruined, but his present owner bought him at a moderate figure, and having been tired, he appears to be sound again. Theodore Smith, who owns most of the horses being trained by George odom. contemplates fitting up a first-class training stable at Belmont Bark. mar thai of W. H. Karrick. after which the new establishment will be patterned. D is anticipated that the new stable will be finished about the beginning of April, when the Odom string now at Uravesend will be transferred to it. Mr. Smith lias just purchased from William Lennox four two-year-olds which have been in Odours cafe since they were bought from A. B. Hancock. James Rowe. who was a visitor at the offices of thi Jockey Clab in New York Tuesday, said that lie hoped to start H. P. Whitneys unbeaten filly Kegrel in the Kentucky Handicap this year. Last year Bowe went to Louisville with Begret. and she won the Kentucky Derby, while he also saddled the winner of the 0. 000 Kentucky Handicap, in Borrow. It is his intention to try to duplicate that feat this year and barring accident at least one and possibly two colts will carry the Whitney dors in the Derby, while Regret and possibly another will make a try for the Kentucky Handicap.
