Mil.. April 7.— Well-balanced fields, .[ stirring racing and exciting finishes marked an iu- ■ teresting days sport at the Howie course this after- I noon. The usual card of seven races was down for * decision. - Casaba scored her second victory of the meeting j When she lasted lone enough to score over Lady London by the shortest of margins. Weather conditions again were unfavorable, a bit- s ing wind sweeping over the course and making top j coats a necessity. The change, however, hid no ten- I deucy to reduce the attendance, which overlapped ■ any of the week. ■ Speculation was brisk throughout the day and was , fairly profitable to the enthusiasts. The Garth-Pnrretto selling race feud broke out I i again this afternoon when l.obby Boyer accounted I for the fifth race. He was advanced 00 over his i; entered price by Parretto and protected by the usual advance by trainer William Garth. Jockey E. Haynes. who had the mount on Rustling : Bruss. was unable to fill his engagements after that horse ran away, due to weakness. A considerable delegation arrived from Hot Springs today and they told of a ten hours delay « in the trip, caused by a wreck that made it necessary to change routes. Wash Norvoll was of the company and he said that the ll.it Springs meeting had been wondrously successful and that there doubtless would be another in the fall. j Jockeys Lyke and Obert came over as well as , A. R. Rresler, William Cahill. Hay and Joe Scher-rer, Charles Huckland, W. 1!. Mitchell. John Mono- , ban, George Yortman, Harry Robinson. Joseph j Walsh. George Harth. Toronto. at the close of the Havre do Grace meeting to school the two-year-olds that will race there. Paul J. Miles was among the arrivals of the day. An effort was made to have Elackford scratched out of the fifth race. Joseph Reilly representing R. E. Watkins. who formerly owned the horse. made the attempt. Watkins gave the horse to Dr. McCarthy last fall for the purpose of obtaining a good home for him. but with the understanding that the old fellow was not be raced. He was left at Pimlico and a bill was owing on him. which finally resulted in bis falling into the hands of W. Murray, in whose name he raced today. The stewards could not take any action in the matter as Murray is the owner of the horse. Sheridan Clarke, who officiated as presiding judge at the King Edward Park meeting last year, lias restored jockey Charley Grand to good standing. Grand got into trouble last July over bad ride on Fort Monroe. Matt Foster got in from Hot Springs with four horses, one of which is Hudweiser. a sixteen-year-old thoroughbred which won two races out of nine starts at Hot Springs and was placed in all of the others. Budweiser pulled up lame in his first few starts, but improved with racing, kept getting sounder and is now in good condition. Rustling Brass ran away throe miles and a quarter after he wi n tin- fourth race and when jockey E. Haynes finally succeeded in pulling liim up he was quite lame. Horsemen from Washington brought over the news that Tom Strahan had committed suicide at the Stag hotel in Washington this morning by taking carbolic acid. He was rushed from the hotel to the hospital, where he died. At various times Strahan filled the positions of track superintendent at Guttenburg, Heuniug and Howie. W. Fenwbk, owner of Quick, which was bid up and bought by I. E. Fitzgerald yesterday, denied to the stewards that he turned the horse loose in the paddock after the sale. He said Fitzgerald himself took off the bridle, saying he wanted only the animal. R. C. Watts, the eighty-five-pound Bowie ap-» prentice, won his maiden race when lie rode Billie Hibbs to victory in the third race. The horses in the French and English breeding and racing establishments of the late Herman H. Durvea will be sold Saturday. May 27. in the paddock at Belmont Park.
