RECORD ODDS IN SOUTH AFRICA. At an Auckland Park. Johannesburg. South Africa, meeting in February, a horse named Everil won a race, and returned a totalizator dividend at the rate of 714 to 1. the lucky individual being a Kafir. Referring to this, a writer in The Latest Durban says: "The large dividend paid out at Auckland Park to a Kafir draws attention to the fact that at that course there is a separate stand with a totalizator attached for the use of stable boys and other Kafirs attending these meetings. Talking to a friend who was present at the Park, he informs me that when it was seen that no one had taken a ticket on Everil at the European tote, a rush was made for the native one, and on ascertaining only one ticket had been taken, the "heads" got busy and tried to buy his ticket, worth about ,750, from the lucky holder. It is said that as much as ,000 was offered for it. but escorted by a bodyguard of about twenty natives he got away from the "boys." anil made for the club office, where he got a receipt for his ticket and 5 to go on with." The largest totalizator dividend ever previously-paid in South Africa was 409 to 1 in a pony race won by Melrose at Johannesburg in 1897.
