« j , , j JAMAICA ALSO IN THE RACING BOOM. Stake Races Recently Closed Show Substantial Gains in Entries Over Last Year. New York. April 7. — The nominations received by the Metropolitan Jockey Ciub for the twelve stakes to be decided during its two coming meetings at Jamaica total 542. an increase over last year of 71. The list will doubtless lie augmented when the mails from Kentucky and other distant points are received. For the principal feature, the Excelsior Handicap, for three-year-olds and over at one mile and a sixteenth, forty-eight entries have so far come to hand, as against thirty-seven last year. Those nominated for the Excelsior embrace the best of the all-aged division, including Roamer. Strom -boli. Sharpshooter. The Finn. Tartar. Flying Fairy, Trial by Jury. Hauberk. Coquette. Silica, Capra. Holy, Buskin. Borrow. Celesta. Prince Henry. Ghetto Girl. Harry Shaw. Bents. Benevolent and others in the four-year-old and over division, while among the three-year-olds are Dominant. Bromo, Chicle. Achievement. Celandria, Spur. Friar Rock. White Hackle. Neville, Old Koenig, Lena Misha and Clap-perbill. For the Long Beach Handicap, at one mile and an eighth, and the Kings County Handicap, at one mile and a sixteenth, practically the same nominations have been made. The two stakes for three-year-olds, the Stuyve-sant and tlie Southampton, have attracted the best of that division, while the two-year-old stakes all show a most gratifying increase in the list of nominations. The Youthful has sixty-two against fifty-four in 1915. The Roscdale, which is for fillies, has an increase of twenty -one over last year, while the Greenfield has received fifty-eight against forty -eight the year previous. In addition to increasing the value of the stakes, racing secretary Walter C. Edwards has also decided to make a substantial increase in the added money to the overnight races. In all races to which an entrance fee is charged the added money will be S500. 1916.sh00 or 00. according to whether the events are selling, allowance races or handicaps.
