SAVILLAS LASSIE STAKES WINS A HAVRE DE GRACE EVENT ALWAYS TAKEN BEFORE BY H. P. WHITNEY. Gallop Takes a Handicap from Brave Cunarder in a Fast Run Race— Dinah Do Manages to Finish First at Last. Baltimore. Md., April 21. — The Lassie Stakes, a half-mile dash for two-year-old fillies, was offered as the carded feature at the Havre de Grace course this afternoon. The smallest field that has gone to the post since the inauguration of the Maryland season took part in this dash, with R. F. Carmans untried representative. The Only One, most fancied. When three starters were dispatched, Peter Sheridans Savilla was slow in getting to going, while Running Shot was away forwardly. Anderson took Savilla to the inside, got through along the rail and had a safe margin at the end over Running Shot. The field probably was the poorest that has so far contested this stake. The Lassie Stakes was contested for the fourth time this afternoon and its brief record is as follows : Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1913 Trumps Ill R. Troxlcr..,lS5 :4H% 1914 Fair Helen 104 C. Fairber. 1.055 :4S% 1915 Regina 104 M. Buxton.. 1,065 :47% 1916 Savilla 110 M. Anderson 940 :49% Seven races were again offered for the edification of racing enthusiasts, a handicap with conditions at one mile and seventy yards brought together a well-matched field. In this race Gallop repeated his victory of earlier in the week, when, in a spectacular contest, hi won by a length from Brave Cunarder with Harbard third. Dinah Do. winner of the second race, was bid un S400 over her entered price of 00 bv G. Alexandra. She was protected by the usual advance. Casco made a runaway affair of the third race, in which Rose Juliette refused to start. Henry Waterson of New York, owner of tie good campaigner Runes, came over to witness the running of the card. Harry Payne Whitney did not have a starter in the Lassie Stakes for the first time. He had won it in the three previous years since its inauguration with Trumps. Fair Helen and Regina. A sale of horses in training will lie conducted in the Havre de Grace paddock on Thursday of next week. Tom Shannon, who trains the string racing under the silks of Edward McBride. will turn Stalwart Helen over to J. W. Moore at Pimlico. Shannon is now training Astrologer and Casco for T. J. Elward. a Toronto sportsman. Edward McBride has sold the two-year-olds Kentucky Boy and Beautiful Man to W. W. Looncy of Philadelphia. William Shields was showing two of the Iaul Powers two-year-olds in the paddock before the races today. Judge Wingfield, a son of Sea King and Clad Tidings, that was purchased from William Garth, attracted a great deal of attention. He is a magnificent colt and already of throe-year-old size. The other was Gratitude, a neatly turned daughter of Hessian. M. Daly showed Defender, a son of Hcno and Eliza Russell in the first race. This horse races for the Jiiincy Stable and is a well-turned gelding. He raced green, but is one that should surely improve. M.inokiu. winner of the opening race for H. G. Bedwell is a gift horse. He was presented to I.ed-well by Thomas Clyde and he has already won twice in the Bedwell colors.
