REGINAS NARROW VICTORY WINS THE OAKS PRELIMINARY BUT HAS TROUBLE IN DEFEATING KATHLEEN. Bringhurst Runs a Surprisingly Bad Race— Marion Gooshy Resumes His Winning Ways and Grover Hughes Scores Once More. Louisville, Ky.. May 1.8. — The Sir Iluon Handicap, the Oaks Preliminary, and a selling handicap at one mile, were the outstanding features of the card of seven races offered at the Churchill Downs track this afternoon and. coupled with the balmy weather conditions prevailing, resulted in another big crowd being on hand to witness the sport. The racing was excellent, with the public again faring generously iu a betting way, as most of their selections scored. The exception was Bringhurst in the sprinting handicap, in which he failed to run to a place. The public received a severe setback through his defeat, as he was backed with rare confidence at odds-on. He promised well shortly after rounding into the stretch, where he took the lead, but in a flash he was passed by Marion Goosby, Hodge ami Fleuro which divided the purse in the order named. The Beverwyck Stable scored its initial Kentucky victory when Old Koenig proved much the best in the opening dash. The Oaks Preliminary was placed to H. P. Whitneys credit by Kegina. but her victory was mainly due to T. McTaggarts brilliant riding, as Kathleen, which finished second, should have reversed the order of the finish with her. The failure was due to jockey Garners blunder in riding Mr. Longs filly into close quarters in the last eighth, which prevented her from extending herself fully. She came with a good rush near the end. but Regimi just managed to last long enough to win by a scant head. The veteran. Grover Hughes, scored his third victory of the Kentucky season ill the mile selling handicap. H. P. Whitneys Pomp wos sold by Albert Simons this morning to E. It. Bradley at private sale. Trainer W. C. Clancy had to defer shipping the nineteen horses owned by Corrigan and McKinney to New York until tomorrow, on account of the derailing of one of the cars intended for use in transferring the horses. Sam Hildreth telegraphed today, requesting a contract for second call oh jockey M. Garners services, hut this cannot be purchused. The method for the riders engagements will be that whenever the stable has no starters in any races, the first comer can have his services. Garner will go with the stable, but may return to ride Kathleen in the Kentucky Oaks. E. C Hopper, who last year served as one of the stewards on the Kentucky tracks, and who is at present spoken of as the presiding official for the proposed meeting at Hawthorne, was among todays visitors. Senator Ollie James paid his first visit of the nam to the track this aiten»oon. After Marion Goosbys victory he was worked out a mile in 1:42, handily. John O. Whitlow was au arrival today from Lexington with his horses, including the crack Westy Hogan. The latters leg is still filled as a result of the injury he sustained just before the running of the Breeders Futurity, but his owner does not consider it serious and thinks that the colt will come around to his best form in a short time. Trainer Louis Tauber sought to have Bringhurst excused from starting this morning, on account of having worked him at speed for three-eighths this morning. Not alone would Judge Price not allow his withdrawal, but he read the riot act to the trainer for making the request. The reason for his three-eighths preliminary this morning was said to be because a prospective purchaser wanted to note if he possessed his usual speed. A difference of 00 is said to have prevented the transfer, the purchaser offering ,500 and the owner holding out for ,000. Gipsey George has developed into a notorious rail runner and at one period of the stretch racing in the thrd race, ran so dangerously close to the inner rail that jockey Van Dusen was forced to take him out of contention. It was Van Dusens opinion that had the colt remained straight he would have been second to his stablemate, Marlon Goosby. Workout over a fast track this morning were: Allan Cain — Jlile in 1:45.
