KENTUCKY STABLES LIKELY YOUNGSTERS. By Dr. M. M. Leach. The recently -arrived band of imi orteil-bred two-year-olds, purchased by Phil T. Chinn in the interests of the Kentucky Stable, are the cynosure of all eyes and are pronounced by our local experts to be. individually and collectively, the best-looking band of youngsters which has, as yet, been brought across the Atlantic. The well-known Newmarket trainer, Mr. J. Butters, selected these youngsters for the Kentucky Stable and is deserving of any amount of credit for the capable and efficient manner in which he made use of his knowledge of blood lines and individuality. Air. Putters, though approaching the advanced age of four score, is still hale and hearty, as alert as many a many thirty years his junior, and still undertakes the training and management of a large racing stable and. at one time, had in his charge a number of horses, the property of the late James R. Keene. Upon their arrival in New York the Kentucky Stables acquisitions were sent on to Charleston, where they spent the greater part of the winter, and their present blooming condition speaks volumes for the benificient effect of the climate of South Carolina. I have not as yet had the opportunity of looking over Mr. Macombers importations, but if their condition in any way corresponds to that of the Kentucky Stable, our conclusion must be that Charleston is an ideal place to winter horses, recently arrived from abroad. The Kentucky Stable might well be termed the "International" stable, for two of its members were bred in Erins green isle, one in France, and another is of Anglo-American extraction. Embraced in the band of eleven are one four-year-old, two three-year-olds, and eight two-year-olds, a couple of which are fillies. Here is the list of them: Set Square, ch. f. 4 by Simon Square — Scythia, by The Sailor Prince. Ronkiss, b. c. 3. by Dark Ronald — Sunkiss. by Sir Geoffrey or Sundridge. Buchanan Brady, br. c, 3. by Bachelors Double — First Over. Beckna, br. c, 3. by Troutbeck — St. Natalia, by Common. , Torchliearer. br. c, 2, by Radium — Hacklers Pride, by Hackler. Golden Fox, ch. c, 2, by Santry — Symington Toll, by Symington. Al Hudson b. c. 2. by Santry — Mirfield, by Wakefield. Swoon, gr. c, 2, by Senseless — Cocaine, by Best Man. Courtship, b. c, 2, bv Phoenix — Courtisane, by Meddler. Melting Moments, b. f, 2, by Lemberg — Love Chase, by Melton. Storm Nyinpli, br. f. 2. by Joe Chamberlain — Maud Primrose, by Mackintosh. The four-year-old filly Set Square is the property of Mr. Butters and Simon Square, her sire, is a well br.ed winner-getting son of St. Simon and Sweet Marjorie. half sister, by Kendal, to Koque-brune. dam of Rock Sand. Scythia Set Squares dam is a sister to Mr. Lorillards One Thousand Guineas winner Sibola, by The Sailor Prince — Saluda, by Mortemer. The three- year -olds Ronkiss and Beckna were originally purchased in the interest of Mr. Jefferson Livingston and were brought over along with Colonel Vennie. Polroma and Fleuro. Neither Ronkiss or Beckna faced the flag last year, but are no.v thoroughly acclimatized and coming to hand in most satisfactory fashion. Ronkiss dam is a sister to Jest, winner of the One Thousand ;uinons and Oaks, and half sister to Black Jester, winner of the St. I *ger and City and Suburban Handicap. Sunkiss was one of the numerous purchases made by the Russian oil king. M. Mantacheff. at the Newmarket December sales of 1913. M. Mantacheff was forced to o to 5,000 before he was able to secure this well bred young mar« . Dark Ronald, sire of Ronkiss. stood second on the English winning sire list last year. Ronkiss is an exceptionally handsome horse and. bricked as he is by a pedigree of such sterling merit, his future use for stud purposes is obvious. Beckna is a brown son of the St. Leger winner Troutbeck and St. Natalia, by Common. St. Natalias dam. St. Mary is the dam of the Oaks winner La Sagesse, and is by Hermit. The next dan. is the famous Adelaide, by Young Melbourne. The blood lints in Rockrms pedigree are beatuti-fully blended and the colt gives every indication of being jieissessed of a high order of s] eed and it is we 11 enough to rememler that Sysonby. Fair Play Ind Star Shoot are also members of this self same Maid of Masham branch of the No. 9 family. Torchbenrer is a seal brown. t:,n flink and muscle, a hardy well-grown sort and a son of Radium out of the famous race mare Hacklers Priie. twice a winper of the Cambridgeshire. Torchb»arer was bred by the late Sir Tntton Sykis at his Sledmere. Yorkshire estate. The sale of th- Sledmere y-arlings was nlw.iys the MMH of the Doncaster Sales week and I suppose Sir Tattons aerage exceeded that of any other breeder who over offered yearlings at public auction. Nothing but tin best found a home at Sledmere and Sir Tat ton bred to not long but the liest. No price in run could stop him when he really wanted a broodmare and the hall mark of Mt dmere is of itself a sufficient guarantee of good breeding. Torchbearer. on account of his Bend Or descent, and also from the fact that he traces in the female line to Beeswing, dam of Nunnykirk and Newminster, must command respect in coming years as a stallion. Buchanan Brady, as his name suggests, is of Irish parentage, and was bred and l oru on County Me;ith. A brown, of the true Irish type, a mere gossoon ns yet, but handles himself well and has already shown himself to be possessed of that essential requisite. si»eed. Bachelors Double Buchanan Bradys ure, won a numler of good races, including the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, the City and Suburban Haidicap at Epsom, the Atlantic Stakes at Liverpool and the Jubilee at Kempton Pari. Bachelors Double is by the great Irish sire Tredennis. whose service fee is ,000. out of Iidy Bawn. by Le Noir. from Miladi. dam of Bachelors Bit ton. by Kisber. Bradys dim. First Over, is by Pioneer, half-brother, by Galopin. to Gallinnb- and runs to Morgiana by Scottisli Chief, half-sister to Morganette. dam of Ard Patrick and Galtce More. Buchanan Brady is i os-sessed of a fine pedigree and has in him the makings of a grert race horse. Golden Fox. a gaudily-marked chestnut son of Santry and Symington Toll, by Symington, from Crossfire, by the Australian champion Carbine, out of Saltire. Scintillants dam, by Bend Or. Trainer A. J. Joyner insists that it is the flashy Gallinules that rae-e. and his arugment is a strong one for Pretty Polly, Slieve Gallion and White Eagle were all of that shading. Al Hudson, also by Santry, has been given a spell at grass and will be taken up in the e-ourse of a few elays. Courtship, the Frenchman of the party, was brought over in the Clarence Mackay consignment last December, and in i oint of condi-tion is a trifle behind those which have had the benefit of a winter in the south. Courtship is a bay by Phoenix, winner of gooel races on the French turf, and now a popuar sire, by Royal Hamilton out if a daughter of St. Simon, and Courtships dam is Courtisane. half-sister, by Meddler, to Mr. Whitneys Futurity winner Yankee. Swoon, bred in Ireland and a gray, is the rail-birds choice. A big, lusty e-olt, of tremenelous power and as fully developed as a three-year-old, Swoem is by the gray Senseless, a good racing son of John Porters City and Suburban winner. Grey Leg. by Pepper anil Salt, which traces in the "male line to Herod by way of The Rake, Wild Dayrell and Ion. Swoons dam. Cocaine, is by Best Man. from Cockeye, by Springfield out of I.ady Binks. by Aventurer. Swoon lias already demonstrated his ability to step it off in the best approved style and will probably be the first of the Kentucky Stables two-year-olds to win rae-es. Melting Moments is a well grown bay filly by the Derby winner Lemberg son of Cyllene and Galicia Bayardos dam, by Galopin. Love Chase, Melting Moments dam. is by Melton sire of the dams of Black Jester, Jest. Yeiur Majesty. Our Lassie. Arizona. La Roe-he. etc., from Sterling Love, by See Saw. This is one of the best winner producing branches of the True Blue family and the close proximity of the blood of Heroel. by way of See Saw. indicates her value for the paddock after her racing days are over. Storm Nymph is a fine filly indeed, a daughter of Joe Chamberlain and Maud Primrose, by Mackintosh. Jeie Chamlierlain was a goxid winner himself and gets any number of winners and is by Phocion. son of Hampton, out of a Charibert mare. Chemistry, dam of that good sire Thrush was also by Charibert and Charibert is by the great Herod horse Thormanby. Storm Nymphs dam, Maud Primrose, is out of Primula, sister to that handsome horse Knight of the Thistle, by Rosebery, and this is a great racing and producing branch of the popular No. 5 family. As yet no member of the "International" stable has been asked for any serious effort, but they are an exceedingly well grown and well behaved band, out of which must come one or more horses of real good class.
