C0NNAUGHT PARK WELL DRENCHED. Heavy Rain Affects the Attendance and Racing — Jack Winstons Steeplechase. Ottawa. Ont.. June 16. — The races at Connaught Park tin- afternoon were run over a deep and heavy track. A steady downpour, which set in last night, continued until after the running of the first race. The change in the going accounted for several withdrawals, but those left in furnished good contests. The rain kept many of the clubs patrons at home. The feature race of the program was a steeplechase over the two-mile course and, despite the heavy going, all of the five starters finished without mishap. The winner turned up in Jack Winston, which beat "has. F. Grainger a length. Queed, a first-time starter through the field, fenced in bold fashion and showed a great flight of speed, but quit after going one turn of the field. In the second race Dr. J. S. Tyrees Kingfisher closed what looked like an impossible gap to overcome-. He was twenty lengths behind the leader at oik? time, but finished in resolute fashion and finallv outgamtd Lvnette and Wall Street. Broomsedge. winner of the fourth race, was bid up 05 over his entered price by Sam Louis, but was retained for owner Parr by the usual advance. The Canadian bred colt Harry Bassett II, was claimed out of the first race by F. P. Jones of Ottawa for 75. After bidding Broomsedge up, Sam Louis claimed the mare Ask Ma from H. G. Bedwell for 75. William Berth also put in a claim for the mare, but Louis outdrew him. Jockey s. Brown was suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the stewards for rough riding in the first race. F. John*on. who rode a few races at Belmont Park, arrived here yesterday and was granted a temporary license. He is with the Garth stable and had his first mount oil Queed in todays steeplechase. At the invitation of the stewards the horsemen gathered in the secretarys office and witnessed the drawing for post position. Some of the horsemen have lieen advocating the plan adopted at New Orleans last winter, where one of their number drew the entries out of the box and post posi- tions were assigned accordingly. This meant that Beat iK sitions were according to program order. Joseph McLennan has received word from J. B. Campbell, who will act as racing secretary at Fort Erie, to the effect that there will be no steeplechase races at Fort Erie this year. Mrs. Zepps two-year-old Tarves, which was shipped from Baltimore to Ottawa, has been turned over to Jack Phillips to train. Todays first race was timed privately in 1:55%.
