LADY ROTHAS STAKE RACE DEFEATS EMBROIDERY IN THE MERCHANTS STAKES AND IS HEAVILY BID UP. Frigerio Has His Troubles in Winning from America but Does It — Franklin Outstays Water - blossom in a Grand Contest. Cincinnati. O., June 24. — The Merchants States, worth ,190 to the winner, was won at I atonia today by W. H. Makers Ijiidy Kotha. which showed vastly "improved form this afternoon as compared with tier recent races and beat Embroidery, after leading for nearly tin- entire -way. tlrover Hughes landed in third place and by finishing fourth Hank ODay saved his entrance and starting fees. Tally Kotha was entered to lie sold for 01 and owner Arthur 15. Hancock who came down from Lexington to see his filly Embroidery run, advanced Lady Kotha by $.00 bids to .,500. Grover I.aker. part owner of the winner, then bid ,900 at which price she was knocked down to him. 1 leusant conditions prevailed here this afternoon and the attendance rivaled that of Derby Day. The speculation was also of record proportions. Some of the si ectators were late arrivals, due to their participation in or desire to witness Cincinnatis monster preparedness parade, in which nearly 60.000 itersons took part. While the stake race was regarded as the stellar number, liecausc of its monetary value, the race that drew the most interest was the third race. in which Franklin, AAaterblossom and Ed Crump were the starters. Seldom has such enthusiasm as attended its running been witnessed at this track and Franklin, the winner, was cheered lustily after wearing Waterblossom down anil again on his return to the scales. His performance was a sparkler, for he was away poorly anil barely es-caiM-d getting caught in the barrier, while the AI« Dowell filly had a good advantage at the start. She showed exterme speed, but the three-year-old went after her resolutely and, after a terrific drive, managed to overhaul her in the last eighth and win by a half length. Ed Crump, while close up all the way, was outpaced by the others after going the first eighth. The sport began with an upset when Velvet Joe got up to iM-at Lady Ivan in the opener. It was the first time that Velvet Jim- has displayed his true form and he indicated that he is a good colt by the imnressive fashion in which he won. The Baker stable made it a double when the cra«-k colt Frigerio just managed to outstay America. Seldom has there l een a gamer exhibition than that shown by the colt in responding to terrific punishment, lie waa under a hard drive throughout the last quarter. America being but a head In-hind him. The intended meeting of the Kentucky State Racing Commission today did not take place on account of the failure of a quorum to be on hand. Jen. W. B. Schorr today acquired, at private terms. the yearling chestnut colt by Dick Welles — Flash of Lightning from R. It. Warvig. Trainer Jack Adkins has made application to secretary J. R. Campliell of the Fort Erie track for eighteen stalls. He will transfer all of his horses to that Canadian course shortly. J. Umensetter bought Hard Hall from J. X.
