Cincinnati, O., June 29. — Upsets were frequent nt Latonia this nfternoon. the first five favorites going down to defeat. Their failures were extremely eostly. Port Light and Ito.val II. were llie great offenders, neither su coeding in landing liettcr tliun third in fields of four starters. The raee that Royal II. ran in was over the mile and an eighth route, a distance supposedly to his liking and this coupled with the fact that loose had the mount drew to him vast l cttiiij attention. lie ran flat teringly for the first three-quarters, then fell back as if palpably short. Dick Williams making his first start since the Latonia Derby showed a fine effort in winning as his rider pleased over Aldebaran. The Livingston stables Julia L. accounted for the sprint handicap under selling conditions. Port Light was a pronounced choice for this race, but the Livingston filly showed her return to her liest form by sprinting into the lead at tin- start and shaking ofT Korfhnge in the stretch. Iort Light suffered from interference ami was ridden in faulty fashion by Goose. Another bad jolt that the talent got was in the opener, when Clare succumbed to Bessanta. Alex ;etz beat a poor band that started in the second race. lie had to be driven to the limit to outstay XI. P.ert Thurman. Dusy Joe was the choice for this race and just failed to overhaul Jane Straith for third place. Walter H. learce graduated from the maiden class in the third race, for which De Land was the choice. The latter tired badly in the stretch. A canvas of the jockeys here disclosed that over SO per ceut would go to Chicago to ride during the Hawthorne meeting. T.efore his departure for the east last night. Martin Nathansou. representative of the Illinois Jockey Club, stated that he received assurances that at least 400 horses would be shipped from Latonia to Hawthorne. According to advices received from New Orleans, the racing bill intended to permit pari-mutuel betting and providing for a state racing commission provision, was advanced to third reading in the house without a dissenting voice. The supporters of the measure feel gratified by this and now express confidence that the bill will pass both branches of the legislature. Handicapper J. I?. Campbell will depart tomorrow night for Fort Erie, where he will serve ns racing secretary. Kdward Jasper will serve as handicapper for the remainder of the Latonia meeting. Only one individual picked Alex Cietz and Walter H. Pearce in the two-horse combination, taking the entire pool, amounting to ,400.80, as a result.
