SASfflS TARR1T0WN STAKES DEFEATS SUN GOD BY INCHES IN A CLOSE FINISH ON A SLOPPY TRACK. Lightning Kills Nancy Fair, Cockleshell and Variety While the Racing -Is in Progress Daddys Choice a Winner Track Talk. Now York, July 13. Sasin accounted for tlio Tarrytown Selling Stakes at the Empire City track today. Outpaced in the early running, lie moved up rapidly on the stretch turn and, under a strong finish, outstayed Sun Cod. The latter met considerable interference anil barely faile.f to win. Kain, which fell prior to tin running of the first race, made the track sloppy, but n fair bottom remained. Scratches left only two-or-three-horse fields for the second and third races respectively. In the latter Emil Herzs Daddys Choice, after being heavily backed, just, got up in time after receiving a rousing ride from L. Mink. The Hcrz stable scored a double, when Devil Fish took the fiftli race, after leading throughout. Transit, backed to odds-ou, was third. Devil Fish was bid up from to ,:iOO by It. F. McKecver, but was retained by his owner. After Sasins victory in the Tarrytown Selling Stakes, the colt was bid up 00 over his entered price and bought by Harry Fink, who arrived from Kentucky this morning. A. .1. Stafford, owner of several horses, died last night at his home in the ISronx. .1. M. Henry, Jr.. arrived from Cincinnati today. S. C. Hildrcth has protested the claiming of Sam McMoekin by I. M. Hedriek. Jr., yesterday on the ground of an irregularity in the claim. Arthur Douglas, an Irish jockey who rode Short Grass in his first race, has been engaged by James IButler. He can ride at 11! pounds. Walter II. 1earce, racing secretary at various Kentucky tracks, was an arrival today. Three horses were killed during a terrific thunder storm at the Empire City track today. They were Nancy Fair and Cockleshell, belonging to August Rclmont, and Variety, owned by James I.utler. The three were in adjoining stalls when a bolt struck lie stable, shattering it almost to atoms. Nancy Fair and Cockleshell wen- killed instantly, while Variety was so badly injured that she had to 1m; destroyed. It was two years ago during the Empire City racing season that Reamer was knocked Insensible by lightning, while a horse belonging to W. L. Oliver was killed. During the same storm Star Shooter was also knocked down. Todays was the most severe electrical . storm that has visited this section of the country in a long time.
