-. . Two Splendid Colts in the American Derby - i . ... .. .. , . . . .,. GEORGE SMITH, WINKER OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY, MAY 13, 1916. GEORGE SMITHS RACING George Smith is a black son of the bay English horse Out of Reach and the bay English marc Consuelo II. So far as his parents are concerned, it is obvious that his ebon coat color is a freak and an inheritance from some black ancestor farther back. In his lineage he is an aristocrat of the bluest English blood and has every qualification to make a good sire when, his racing days are over. His sire and dam were imported when young ami raced successfully in this country, neither starting in England. James R. Kecnc brought Out of Reach over and scld or gave him to Mat-lie Corbet t, for whom most of his racing was done. His sire was the famous Persimmon, which won the Epsom Derby and Doncastcr St. Lcgcr for the then Prince of Wales, who was afterwards that wise monarch King Edward the seventh. Last year George Smith was a brilliant two-year-cld, winning nine of the twelve races in which he was started. For a tini he trained off and was not only beaten, b; t was unplaced in three races. This was after he had won in seven consecutive starts and come to be considered an invincible. However, a rest restored his health and speed and he won his last two races like the good colt he was and is. At tli2 Laurel meeting he raced in his true form and easily defeating Slipshod, King Neptune, Cclandria, Dodge, Spur and Tea Caddy in the Annapolis Stakes, made" such an impression cn John Sanford that he gave Edward McBridc 5,000 for him. As a three-year-old his first start was in the Kentucky Derby, which he won in a memorable struggle with the fine English celt Star Hawk. Next, on a muddy track and carrying five pounds penalty he finished second to Dodge in the Latonia Derby and in his last race was unplaced, in the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct. Rumor has it that he has gone lame and may nqt be able to start today. -
