. 4 CONCERNING- THE REVIVAL OF A GREAT RACE FOR THE STAR THREE-YEAR-OLDS 4 The last racing over a Chicago track took place at Worth, Monday, October 31, 1904. Quite a long time ago that. Today the long interregnum ends. King Horse comes back to play his pleasing part in displays of his matchless speed over the Hawthorne race track. Moreover, Chicago is to have an American Derby again. It will not be the American Derby of glorious memories and associations, because unlike the famous Washington Dark race, it will not be run at the correct Derby Distance of a mile and a half. However, that does not matter much now. The big thing is that the Derby is to be run. It will not lie contested by the big field that was hoped for, but it will be a real horse race for all that. Every colt going to the post is a good one. With a big field starting, the spectators have only a fleeting impression of a mass of swiftly moving horses and riders without being able to separate them visually. A small field of good and well-matched horses furnishes a more satisfactory spectacle, for the reason that details of the action of horses and jockeys can be scanned from start to finish. Such will be the case today in the running of the Derby and it should afford highly exciting entertainment. The American Derby at Washington Dark in its later years was the most important and valuable race of America for three-year-olds. Annually it drew a greater assemblage of spectators to view its decision lain did any other race run in the United States. In a racing way it was a big thing, and Chicago rises in a big way to the call of a big thing. It did then and, with an equal attraction provided, it will again. The present revival of the name and race is experimental. If it turns out to be successful there is no reason why, in the years to come, Hawthornes American Derby should not grow into air even greater standard of importance than formerly attached to Washington Darks American Derby. Particulars .of the decisions of the big race at Washington Park are given in the following interesting table: Year. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Val.
