MUDDY AT EMPIRE CITY PRINCE OF C0M0 FURNISHES A SURPRISE IN WINNING WILLIAMSBRIDGE HANDICAP. Arnold Makes a Poor Showing in His Racer-Shyness Wins Aftain and Is Bip Up Trainer Garrison in Luck. Xew York, July 14. The feature of the racing at the Empire City track today was the AVilliambridge Handicap. Owing to the slow and lumpy condition of the track Comely and Conning Tower were withdrawn, leaving but four starters. The unexpected happened when Prince of Como won after a drive with Marse Henry and J. J. Lillis. The first two named singled out early and had the race between them all the way. Marse Henry did not show his usual high turn of speed, probably owing to track conditions and finally retired, leaving Prince of Como to win by a leiutth. J. J. Lillis was poorly managed and did not show anything like the race hi; did in his previous start when he ran second to Femnouse at Aqueduct. After the first race Putwell was asked by the stewards if anything had happened to the favorite, Arnold, which retired abruptly when in front an eighth from homo. Putwell said the colt only ran a quarter of a mile and acted as if he wanted to Ixdt after turning for home. He did not know whether anything was hurting the horse or whether Ik? stepped on a stone. "When I hit him with the whip," said Putwell. "he simply curled up. He may be an overated horse for he certainly quit badly." Shyness showed she is in good form at present by easily defeating the others of her sex she was meeting in the second race. Set Square was heavily backed, but after setting the pace for a half mile quit badly when the winner challenged and finished uimhiced. Shyness was advanced from ,100 to ,S0 by .1. Kelley after her victory, but was protected. James Duller has obtained second call on the services of jockey II. Shilling until the close of the Saratoga meeting. Horses trained by E. II. Garrison accounted for two of the afternoons races when Pepublican and Mirza scored after being well backed. Frank Shannon, J. AV. Smith, AVilliam E. Apple-gate, Jr., and AVilliam Kerryhart departed for Chicago last night. They will return east after tin- close of the Hawthorne meeting. Col. J. P. Sullivan.
