DULL DAY AT EMPIRE CITY SLOW TRACK BRINGS MUCH SCRATCHING AND DETRACTS FROM PUBLIC INTEREST. Hank ODay Defeats Harry Shaw in the Principal Race of the Afternoon Nephthys Wins Again and Basses to a Now Owner. New York. July 21. There was nothing particularly brilliant about the program at Empire City today. Owing to the slow condition of the track, there wen; many scratches and the enthusiasm that is customary was lacking. The TuckaJioe Ilirndicap. an overnight race, was the feature and it had but four starters. Harry Shaw-was tJie favorite, but Hank ODay had him beaten from the drop of the flag. The Schorr racer rushed into the lead early and was never threatened, though Garner rode him out to the finish while several lengths jn front. It was a fast race, considering the condition of tin; track, and the fact that Hank ODay ran several feet from the rail at times. W. F. Martin, artiag for the Kentucky Stable, lias purchased from A. O. Talbott the horse Nightstick. J. W. Schorr has bought Cudgel from the II. P. Whitney stable. Good Counsel was claimed out of the fifth race Saturday, E. C. .Griffiths securing him. J. W. Hedrick also filed a claim for the horse, but the former won in the drawing. The weather was cloudy and sultry and the track slow, especially close to the inner rail. Frank E. Drown was an arrival today from tin; fauadiaii circuit. His horses have been sent to Saratoga. Jockeys T. and J. McTaggart were absent from the list of riders today on account of the death of their father, who will be buried Tuesday morning. Nephthys. after scoring for her new owner, II. Fink, was bid up to .S00 and sold to Roxie An-garola. J. .1. Moran, former owner of the filly, advanced her to ,700 and Mr. Angarola bid ,800. Plumose was also the target of a run-up when she won the third race, Euiil Herz bidding her up to ,200 and getting her at that figure. Joe McCahoy won with Marie Odile and Plumose through his ability in getting away well and good judgment .n picking his going. He would have been beateir on Plumose by True as Steel, had he not kept the; latter in the deeper going next to the rail until turning for homo. Then he dashed away and True A-s Steel could not overcome the lead thus obtaiuod. Several horsow did not run to their form owing to the eondtiun of the track next to the inner rail. It takes it least three days for the Empire City track to Ihcoiik; fast after a rain storm. It should be fast tomorrow. Clarence Doris, a well-known turfman, was a visitor at the; ci urse for the first time in some days, after having been confined to a New York hospital with pneumonia. S. J. Itaiocclii claimed True as Steel out of the third race for ,.!00. II. Fink bid Mot.ocacy up from 00 to 1916.sh00. but failed to get him. his connections bidding $.105.
