KATENKAS TROY STAKES WINS THE FEATURE RACE AT SARATOGA "WITH PASSING FANCY SECOND. R. F. Carman Scores a Double Victory with Startling and G. M. Miller Hard Cash Wins Like a Good Two-Ycar-Old. By J. She scored over an ordinary liand of youngsters, tlie raee lfiiiK under selling conditions, with .1.010 the top price, Passing Fancy landed second money and County Court was third. Eight started.. The Beverwyck Stable, taking advantage of the rule allowing starters to be added conditionally that they assume top weight and lit; entered for the highest selling price, added the filly Alone At Last. Katenkns performance was nothing sensational, but it was a vastly improved one over her last race. That she was expected to run in improved form was foreshadowed in the betting, for the wise ones supported her witli confidence. She was in serious danger of getting pinched off several times in th early running but Lykes persisted in sticking close to the inner rail and this saved much ground for her, besides enabling her to wear 1assing Fancy down in the filial eighth and win with speed in reserve. Katenka was entered to besold for ,000. but slie went back to her stable for ,500 on the hid of A. L. Denny, who was acting for .1. O. Keene. After she was knocked down there was a bid of .,700. A hard shower this morning benefited the track considerably, for it packed the heretofore loose dirt and made the going firmer and faster. The threatening weather did not have a deterring effect on the attendance, while the moisture clarified the atmosphere considerably and brought relief from the sweltering heat of yesterday. The three-quarters handicap, -which followed the stake raee. was taken by It. F. Carmans Startling in luck- fashion, as he was benefited by a fast sendoff and had a clear track for the entire raee, whereas Blind Baggage, which ran as if best, was away slowly and suffered additionally by Prince of Coino leaning against him through most of the stretch racing. Carter, which found it a difficult task to stay a half mile at a fast pace before being put to jumping, made a show of his opponents in the about two-miles race through the lield. He fenced faultlessly and won from Saudow, the pacemaker, witii Sixty-Four landing third. II. I. Whitneys Hard Cash showed a splendid performance in the opener, winning as his rider pleased and running like a high-class colt. It. F. Carman scored his second victory of the afternoon when his G. M. Miller made a show of those starting in the lifth race. Nephthys, the favorite, ran :i bad race and finished last. A J. Young stated this morning that the crack three-year-old Dulse, while apparently over the trouble resulting from his bowed tendon and taking his light exercise in good style, will not race this year, as it is the intention to save him for next year. Leo Ray, which also suffered a bowed tendon in the lark Handicap at Churchill Downs, is training in good fashion and will race again at the Kentucky fall meetings. George .1. Longs three-year-old Jasper is taking his jumping lessons in great style here and trainer Pete Coyne will nominate him liberally for the fall steeplechases, including the Harbor Hill Cup. Jockey D. Connelly was suspended for three days by the stewards after the last race yesterday, for cutting across in front of the others soon after the start. H. C. Applegate, secretary-treasurer of the New Louisville Jockey Club, was among the arrivals this morning from Kentucky. Former Mayor John Hopkins of Chicago and Roger Sullivan arrived this morning from Chicago. The Grab I5ag Handicap, for two-year-olds, to be run August 10, attracted 44 nominations, including the best in the country. Starter Cassidys schooling list for the present consists of only Blanchita, Bearverskill and Chiclet. Trainer Jack McCormack of the James Butler stable will have thirty-five yearlings added to his present string of older racers. The youngsters are now being broken at the Butler farm near Yonkers. Jockey Tom McTaggurt has severed his connections, for the time being, with the II. P. Whitney stable. Increasing weight and the hot weather is said to have been the cause. McTaggart will endeavor later to reduce his surplus weight gradually and resume riding next fall. James Coffroth is expected here next week in the interest of his Tijuana track, where racing is again in contemplation, beginning Thanksgiving day. Mr. Coffroth will endeavor to induce horsemen to ship to the Mexican track and will also try to secure well-known officials to assume supervision of the racing. Judge C. II. Pettingill was advised this morning that A. U. Snreekels intends to ship here most of his Napa Stock Farm yearlings to be sold during the Belmont Park meeting. They will come here in charge of trainer O. W. Carroll, who will also bring "with him the good three-year-old Saugallo. Jockey K. Taplin will hereafter do the riding for Grant Hugh Browne, whose horses are being trained by former jockey D. R. McDaniel. The latter will make the riders engagements. According to a report this morning, trainer W. B. Jennings, acting for A. K. Macomber, has signed jockey John Loftus to a contract to ride for the Macomber stable next year. John Sanfords highly regarded Vitellius, by Quin-tee, which latter ran Sea. Sick a dead heat for the French Derby, suffered a broken pastern here recently and Dr. R. W. McCully will mnke an effort to save him and has put the leg in a plaster paris cast. Vitellius marks the third high-class racer owned by the Sanfords to terminate his racing career as a result of injury sustained on this track. Chuctanunda and Mohawk were the other two that broke their legs here. "Dad" Yeager, father of J. C. Yeager was last night hastily summoned to the bedside of the latter, whose illness has taken a turn for the worse. His many friends are much concerned and numerous inquiries during the day were sent to the Clifton House at Niagara Falls as to his condition. S. 1.
