NO STAKE AT FORT ERIE YESTERDAYS CARD OF PURSES ONLY BUT GOOD RACING IS FURNISHED. Kewessa Takes the Feature Race in a Fast Run Three-Quarters Samuel R. Meyer, El Rey and Maxims Choice Claimed After Winning, Fort Erie, Ont., August S. W. L. Olivers sprinter Kewessa accounted for todays feature race at Fort Erie, a three-quarters handicap, in which lie met some fast horses. Kewessa, well ridden by F. Robinson, left the barrier fast and clear of the others and was never headed. lie set a fast pace all the way and ran the three-quarters in 1:12V:-.. Pesky was second and Etruscan third. A light rain, which fell during the night, improved the going. There was a good cushion on the track and lust time was recorded during the afternoon. The card was in the main made up of selling races, but the fields were of well-matched horses and good contests resulted. Selling race activities were again in order. There wero eleven claims lodged for the plater. Samuel R. Meyer after he won the third race and in the drawing W. Stormont secured the horse for 50. The other claimants were: S. Louis, C. T. Worthington, J. G. Bussey. A. C. Parretto. G. Alexandra, W. C. Overton, G. E. Chancellor, M. Lowen-stein and W. Fcnwick. Barney Schreiber, who is spending a few days here, will leave for Saratoga at the conclusion of the meeting. Mr. Schreiber expresses the opinion that it would be unwise to attempt to give a fall meeting at Hawthorne and does not look for racing to be resumed at any of the Chicago tracks before next. year. W. P. Fraser. secretary of the Ontario Jockey Club, was a visitor. Mr. Fraser came over in connection with the closing of the stakes to be run at Woodbine next fall and was well pleased with the manner in which the horsemen responded. George Phillips, who holds the contract on the apprentice B. Koppleman. has had several offers for the lad. but has turned them down. Koppleman had the mount on Jane Straith when she won on Saturday. Claims were lodged for the two-year-old El Rey by F. J. Coleman, Wi Smith, AA Fenwick, AV. Stormont. G. Alexandra, B. Alexandra. M. Lowenstein and S. Louis. AV. Stormont secured the colt,, ju,. tlit! .drawing for 50. Sam Louis secured Maxims Choice after he Avon for 50. Other claims for the horse were filed by W. Fenwick. C. E. Chancellor, J. M. Shilling and F. AV. Statou. After dismounting from the last race jockeys Dislimon and Parrington got into an altercation in front of the judges stand. They were suspended. Jockey Ambrose was also suspended and his case referred to the stewards for his ride on Hampton Dame yesterday.
