CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. John E. Madden has sold the two-year-old colt .Starlike, by Star Shoot Blakeslee, to John San-ford, for the reported price of 5,000. H. II. Phillips, who will ride on the eastern tracks for W. B. Jennings, trainer of the A. K. Maeomber stable, can ride at ninety-two pounds. He is seventeen years of age. J. E. Widener of Philadelphia has purchased all of the yearlings, thirteen in number, bred and raised bv Edmund Blanc of France. The youngsters are by Ajax and Verwood and will be shipped here in September. Churchill is going along slowly in his work and trainer Murphy expects to have him back to the races for the Belmont Park meeting. The lameness with which he Mas stricken at Hawthorne has disappeared. Foxhall P. Kecnes Puss- in Boots has been unsuccessful in her invasion of the English turf. According to late reports from that country, this filly has developed quite a temper and refuses to break away from the post. The owners of the new Kenilworth track at Windsor have made arrangements for the use of the Latonia pari-mutuel machines for the inaugural meeting at the new track, it is reported, there being insuffeient time to install a plant of their own. The entries for the Epsom Derby and Oaks of 1918 closed last week, when 287 nominations for the Derby ami 205 for the Oaks were received. King George has, five nominations to each classic, and entries have also been received from the stewards of the Jockey Club and all the leading owners and breeders throughout the country. The Newbury Stakes of ,500 was won at New-burv in England, last Friday, by J. Buchanans Hum- On. ridden by .1. Child, by three lengths from Reid" Walkers Black Adder, with Bullock in the saddle. Lord Derbys Canyon, with Martin up, was third, five lengths behind, and W. Singers Market Girl last. Onlv four horses went to the post. The betting was: Hurry On, 9 to 4; Black Adder, 4 to 1, and Canyon, 5 to 5.
