CESAREWITCH AND CAMBRIDGESHIRE. Entries to the important English fall handicaps were published August 4, and, all things considered, make quite a good showing. Of the more widely known, the Cesarewitch of two and a quarter miles, received sixty nominations; the Cambridgeshire at a mile and an, eighth, fifty-three; the Newmarket October at a mile and a half, firty-nine. and the Suffolk Nursery Plate for two-year-olds, forty-three. Commenting on the entries to the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire, "Augur" said in London Sporting Life of August 3: "Such are the conditions under which we live just now that the publication of the entries for the two big autumn handicaps, the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire, attracts comparatively little attention. In the ordinary way, the likelihood of this or that candidate being entered for the Cesarewitch would be discussed for days, if not weeks, beforehand, but there has been practically nothing of the kind this year. Now, however, that the lists have been issued they are interesting enough to merit some consideration. . First of all. it is to be noted that there are sixty subscriptions to the longdistance handicap aad fifty-three for the companion event of tite Houghton week. Last year the figures were eighty-seven and seventy-nine respectively: in ltljt they were a hundred and three and eighty-one, and in 1913, when war was 1111-thought of. a hundred and one and eighty-five. The drop, therefore, in this years totals is a substantial one. but. even so, 1 fancy quite as many entries have been received as could reasonably be expected under the circumstances. "The only previous winners of the Ccsaewitch entered again are Son-in-Law and Troubadour, both the property of Sir Abe Bailey. Ijist year, it will be remembered, the field included no fewer than three animals Warlingham. Fiz-Yama and Troubadourwhich had .btjen successful in the eorre-sponing event on some earlier occasion. On the whole, however, the present entry may be accepted as a good and representative one. and the Clare-haven Stable, which has been associated with more than one triumph in the race, has four candidates in Lance Chest, Lanius, Salamandra and Khedive III., while Augur, which is at present in Ireland, will probably rejoin Mr. Gilpins establishment in the event of its being decided to prepare him for the ordeal. Colonel Hall AAalker has Russley and King Robert, and other owners with more than one representative are Mr. AV. M. 5. Singer Prawle Poitn and St. Eloi, Mr. Mortimer Singer Achtoi Point and St. Eloi, Mr. Mortimer Singer Railway and Coutino, Mr. Reid Walker Eau Claire and Florimel, Mr. E. Hultou Nisus and Green Falcon, Sir Abe Bailey Dark Opal, in addition to the other pair named, Mr. Louis Winans Race Rock. Dalmatinii and Flaming Fire, and Mr. AV. Raphael Sanctum and Aboukir. "Likely single-strings include Lord Derbys Hasta. Mr. J. A. Duukerleys Parrot, Sir AV. Nelsons Capital. Mr. J. L. Iugtlahs Pollen. Mr. J. Coopers Cornsheaf. Sir W. J. Ta terns The Revenge, Mr. AV. Iliggs AVet Kiss. Air. Bower Ismavs Hare Hill, Mr. G. Barclays AVolfaline, Mr. P. AV. Carrs The Ant, Mr. D. J. Jardines AVardha, Mr. J. Ellis Potters Golden Rule, Colonel Holdsworths Sybarite and Mr. John Sanfords Nassovian. all of which have earned reputations as stayers of some ability. There are, moreover, a couple of Irish four-year-olds in Lord Decies Ballaghtobin and Mr. D. Sullivans I.a Poloma, the former of which was cou-sitleibly fancied for the race last year, but failed to make much of a show. La Poloma won one of His Majestys Plates over two miles, at The Cur-ragh. last month, easily beating Ballaghtohiu, which, however, was conceding her a stone. On an earlier occasion the daughter of Prospector finished a long way in front of Lord Decies colt, this being in the Dublin Plate of a mile and seven-eighths at Baldoyle, when she was second and the other unplaced, at a difference of eight pounds. Thus we may take it, I think, that La Poloinn stays sufficiently well to be worthy of a place in a Cesarewitch fields "A preliminary examination of the Cambridgeshire list also leaves an impression of that popular event having fared remarkably well in respect to the quality of the horses engaged. Mr. Sol Joels "triple-crown" hero. Poinmern. which it had been hoped would appear again at Lingfield this week, but was struck out of his engagement there, figures as the last of the fifty-three in the "Calendar" entry, but he is quite the "star" candidate amongst a really high -class list. Last years winner. Silver Tag, is engaged again, as also are Mount AVilliam and Khedive III... which were respectively second and third to the Whatcombe filly. Including Khedive III., the Clarehaven Stable has a strong hand to play from, the others trained by Mr. Gilpin bei ing Lanius, Argos. Figaro and Lance Chest, while Silver Tag is supported by others at Whatcombe in Jack Annaudale, Aolta and Julian. Other performers of note are Foxton. My Ronald. Eos, Russley. Gay Lally. Clap Gate. Cattistock. Chapel Brampton, AVet Kiss, Cornsheaf, AAillna Stop. Achtoi. RIacknddcd. Sir Eager. Phalnris, Canyon. Cer-val and Flaming Fire. The Irish contingent consists of Ballaghtobin and three now located there, but. trained by the Northumberland sportsman. Captain Bewicke. viz.. View Law. Mohacz and Strolling Saint. Further, the successful Middlehani trainer. Coiling, is responsible for three in tin- recent winners Kings Prize and Aorschot and the four-year-old Crevasse. The haudicapper. therefore, has an onerous task before him in connection with both Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire, and the result of his labors will be scanned with interest in due course."
