DORVALS OPENING WELL PATRONIZED. Great Crowd in Attendance and Is Rewarded with Some Excellent Racing. Montreal. Que., September 13. The fall meeting of the Dorval Jockey Club began this afternoon with a record-breaking crowd in attendance. Since the spring meeting there lias been a reorganisation of the club, with Capt. AV. F. Presgrave succeeding S. N. Uolmnn as managing director. A new policy has been inaugurate.! by the club anil the higher grade of horsemen and race goers is being caterd to. That this nolicy will prove a success was made evident by the" class of the attendance this afternoon and the volume of speculation. In former vears the half-milcrs on-dominated at Dorval. with the result that the meeting lost caste with the better element in Montreal. A splendid program was provided for the opening and keen contests were in order. The two feature races furnished stirring contests and incidentally AV. Shields saddled the winners of both races. The three-quarters sprint went to Top o th Morning, while Celto won the mile and seventy yards handicap, in which she beat the odds-on favorite Christie by a head after a long and hard stretch drive. There was decided improvement in track conditions and with it came a big improvement in the racing. Well-matched fields went to the post in a majority of the races and much enthusiasm was manifested. Manager Presgrave expressed himself as well pleased with the opening. He has planned other improvement for the course. It is possible that the clubhouse will be moved nearer the grandstand, which will make that part of the enclosure more popular. The opening of the meeting at the new Devonshire Park course, near Windsor, has been postponed until September ..0. A list of officials will le announced shortly. Tin second meeting of the season at Kempton Park will open Septemlicr "3. Former steeplechase jockey Brady liailor, who was in one of the local hospitals, for six weeks suffering from a fractured skull, died Monday night. The name Gnilor was a noia de turf that the rider assumed. His real name was I.im:ir K. iaylord and his father was connected in some way with the stock yards in Kansas City. A man named Sparks, at Twenty-eighth and Main streets, Kansas City, was also notified of his death. The body is being held hero pending word from his folks. Carl Mitchell, who rode for Frank Frisbie some few years back, lias taken over the horses owned by S. Miodow. The latter is a local man, who has lately gone into racing and who intends to purchase several more horses to race in Cuba. At present his string comprises Johnny Harris, Montreal and a two-year-old filly, that has never started. Edward Tribe has been engaged to do the starting at Kempton Park, and E. .. Smith will be the presiding steward. The ten yearlings that Dr. .T. S. Tyree purchased in Kentucky have arrived at tins Benning track, where they will be broken this fall by AV. Shields. They are said to be a good-looking band. F. AV. Foster has been engaged to look after the horses owned by G. Alexandra during Cue Dorval meeting. A. Brent, who has been with Alexandra for several months, is confined to his home by rheumatism. C. A. Crew left for Toronto with his horses this morning. L. Lumsdcn and C. J. Brockmiller shipped at the same time. At the conclusion of the Dorval meeting Captain W. F. Presgrave will ship a carload of horses to Phnlieo. Another carload will be sent to Toronto. The Maryland consignment will, in the main, b: made up of yearlings, five of them being bred at Mrs. L. A. Livingstons farm at Cobourg. Out. II. S. Newman has wrritten AA. Martin that he will ship the horses he intends racing next winter from his farm at Sweetwater, Tex., to the Oak-lawn track at Hot Springs. Pan Zareta will be among the number. This is the first time in four years that the mare has had a letup. She is in fine condition and weighs 1.200 pounds.
