DOUGLAS PARK ONCE MORE LOUISVILLE AUTUMN HACING OPENS WITH FLATTERING PROMISE OF SUCCESS. Dodge Wins the Douglas Park Inaugural Handicap Like the Good Colt He Is Kollister Also Wins for Mr. Macomber Gossip of the Track. Louisville, ICy., September IS . lV.uglns Park began its fall racing season of eight davs this afternoon under most nattering auspices. Die attendance was rwiI anil in excess of what was expected, considering it was Monday and following so closely on the staie fair, which terminated in tins city Saturday. The weather had a wintrv tiiiue and top wraps were a comfortable adjunct. Judging by todays satisfactory conditions, racing prospects at Douglas Park. Iliurchill Downs and Jjttoma are as flattering as formerly. Tin; extensive A. K. Macomber establishment was conspicuously successful during the afternoon. The crack colt. Dodge, bought at public sale at Saratoga by Mr. Macomber for S17.500. accounted for the feature race, the Douglas Park Inaugural Handicap, at out- mill! and a sixteenth, and having a net value of :.205 to the winner, after a hard stretch duel with his former stablemate. franklin. Ladv Rotha led the others anil, Star Jasmine, bv finisji-mg fourth, saved her stake. Dodge was" given a herculean task to concede weight to all the others in the race, but he :iciuitted himself in gallant style, overcame some interference on the lower turn, fought it: out stubbornly in the stretch and drew out in the last seventy yards. The miblie had confidence in his ability and supported him heartilv. The Macomber colors were carried to victory in the initial dash when llollister won the purse in a drive with l-iioiiia. Kittenish, another member of the Macomber stable, finished second to Midwav. while St, Isidore was a close runner-up to Kathleen in tin fifth race. Interesting sport developed in all the races, the winners being taxed to their utmost, with the exception of Midway, which repeated bis former good victory and Won easily enough. A distinct disappointment in the race won by Midway w:is Cudgel, which was a hopeless follower all the way. J. J. Mill-docks defeat in tin- second race by the outsider John W. Klein, gave the public a setback and it did not profit John W. Schorr to any extent, for It. G. Martin advanced the winner from his entered price of ,200 to ,800. the owner protecting him with a advance bid. George J. Longs- Kathleen showed a good performance in the fifth race, which she Avon easilv after having led for the entire way. The speculation this afternoon" compared well with that of the opening day last year and promises a substantial increase as soon as the public gets a better line on the racers, which have come here from various sections of the country. Todays visitors included many "notables in the turf world, besides many prominent in business ami political circles. Phil Rcilly. formerly identified with the Inter-Mnuntain circuit, was among the visitors. Lieut.-Gov. Barrett OHara. of Illinois, was among the visitors and enjoyed the sport. Jockey Murphy was temporarily disabled while at the post for the third race when he was kicked on the leg by Phoeion. Berlin, his mount, slimved a big cut in the side as a result of Phocions kick Former Racing Secretary "Walter II. Pcarco today assumed his new duties as forfeit clerk. He will occupy the same position at. Latonin. Jockey II. II. Phillips had to cancel his riding engagements on Typhoon and Bcautv Shop, on account of being taken with cramps after dismounting from St. Isidore.
