CARMAN STRING ARRIVES AT LAUREL. Baltimore, Md.. Sept. 21. The thoroughbreds embracing the racing establishment of Richard F. Carman, well-known New York turfman, arrived at Laurel yesterday and will be kept on edge for the opening of the fall meeting of the Maryland State Fair on Monday. October 2, to run twenty-six days. The horses that will carry the Carman white and blue stripes came from Blue Bonnets, Montreal, and every member of the stable was taken off the cars in excellent shape. It was the first shipment from Canada, and others are to follow. Mr. Carman has been racing over the Maryland tracks for many years and before he shipped to Canada ho had campaigned his string with fair success on the metropolitan courses, winning a number of races with Startling, a fast three-year-old son of Marta Santa and Countrv Fraud. Startling is the star of the stake division of the Carman stable and the colt will be seen in the principal races to be run during the coining meeting in Southern Maryland. As a two-year-old Startling won three or four races here last year, his most impressive victory being scored in the Blue Point Stakes at Laurel Park, in which, at a long price, he outraced some of the best, juveniles that went to the post during the Laurel meeting. Mr. Carmans stake entries are not as numerous as in previous years. lie has made nine, and besides Startling he will race Royalist, AVater Lily and King Baggot in the feature races in Southern Maryland next mouth. AVater Lily is well known to followers of the turf in this section, the big chestnut daughter of AVatercress having won several purses here last fall. Mr. Carman, who trains his own horses, was much surprised when he looked over the extensive improvements made at Laurel since his visit there last fall. Before leaving Canada he made an effort to secure first call on the services of Jockey F. Robinson, who has been riding in sensational form across the border of late. Robinson will come to Laurel at the conclusion of the Dorval Park meeting to ride as a free lance.
