DODGE RUNS A GREAT RACE GIVES AWAY WEIGHT AND DEFEATS ALL THE GOOD WESTERN HANDICAP HOUSES. 1 Grand Attendance Graces the Latonia Opening La-tonia Takes the First Race Appropriately Conning: Tower in Easy Victory Gossip. J Cincinnati, O., October 7. A. IC. Macombers crack three-year-old Dodge added to his laurels when bo accounted for the Inaugural Handicap of one mile and a sixteenth, which featured Latonias tqiening this afternoon and in which all the stars in these parts were engaged. Buxton rode Dodge faultlessly and the colt ran to his best form, being in the thickest of contention from the rise of the barrier and holding on with grim gamoness in the xiiial drive, although conceding weight to all of Jiis opponents. Rancher, which finished a hard striving second, was by no means disgraced, for his performance was also a sparkler. Hodge stood a bard stretch drive and managed to overhaul Vogue for third money. Vogue showed the most earlv speed, but found the distance a trifle further thaii she cares for, but in finishing fourth, she saved her Ktake. The m;t value to the winner was ,435. Dodges performance had additional merit from the fact that he reduced the track record of 1:43-,, made by The Manager, to 1:43. The horses victory was highly popular and he and his rider were cheered loudly on their return to the scales. A crowd of almost record proportions was on hand for the opening and took a keen interest in the sport and its attending incidents. The card was an excellent one and resulted in inanv spirited finishes. The public were in exceptionally good form and managed to land on most of the winners. Speculation was of great volume. It was fitting that T. C. McDowells fillv Latonia should emerge from the maiden class in her initial effort over this track. .She won in easy inaimer from Penrod. Conning Tower proved best in the second race ami led all the wav. Cudgel bad no difficulty in the third race, Auriga being his closest opponent at the finish. Faux-Col came out of his race in a bad wav and will probably not bo raced again in some time. Starter Morrissey suspended jockey Shilling for six days for disobedience at the post. John Dillon, former secretary of the Latonia Jockey Club and now serving his second four-years term as clerk of Kenton county, was among the visitors this afternoon. Christopher J. Fitz Gerald, well-known racing oltlcial, passed through here this morning en route to Lexington, where he will remain several days. He will bo hero later to enjoy the racing for a few days. Jockey H. II. 1hillips will be absent from the saddle for some time on account of an injury to his foot, sustained by a fall at Churchill Downs. Large delegations came from Louisville and Lexington for the opening. General Manager John llachmeister after the running of the first race was served with a summons to appear in police court Monday morning for failure to have a license, that a recently enacted Latonia council ordinance requires the track to have. The ordinance exacts a license fee of 00 for each race run over the track and todays action will be the basis for a test case. Hal Price Ileadley, president of the Thoroughbred Horse Association, came over today from Lexington to confer with General Manager llachmeister, in regard to the tax that the state is contemplating imposing on the Kentucky racing associations. The partnership existing between J. S. Ward and Lou Jones in the two-year-olds Berlin and Sedan has been dissolved. Mr. Jones took Sedan, which he has turned over to R. D. Williams to train during the Latonia meeting. Trainer John Whalen, who is training Boots for Jesse Lcwisolni, sent word to secretary J. B. Campbell that he will ship the horse here to run in the Latonia Cup. Jockey T. Rice was among the newcomers from Canada and will accept mounts here.
