BUTWELL TO RIDE FOR MR. BELMONT IN 1917. Baltimore, Md., October 7. Jockey J. Butwell has signed a contract to ride for August Belmont, chairman of the Jockey Club, next year. Sam Uildreth, trainer for Mr. Belmont, arranged terms a few days ago and Mr. Belmont signed the contract yesterday. The terms were not made public, but it is reported on good authority that Butwell would receive close to ,000 as a retaining fee, with the usual fee for losing and winning mounts. Andrew Miller, owner of Roamer and a steward of the Jockey Club, released Butwell at the Belmont Park fall meeting for disobeying riding instructions when he had the mount on Roamer. Butwell is a good rider, but, during the past two years, he has been cureless regarding his physical condition. It is understood that the new contract provides for his release if he does not keep himself in proper condition to show Ms best skill at all times while in the saddle. i
