A DERBYS OF THE PRESENT YEAR IN NORTH AMERICAN RACING AND THEIR WINNERS I Seven races dignified with the name Derby were run over North American tracks this year. These ranged from the correct mile and a half distance of the Latonia Derby down to the absurd mile and an eighth of the Brooklyn and Nevada Derbys. It passes understanding how or why. when it was decided to revive the Brooklyn Derby, it was discredited by cutting it down to a mile and an eighth. It was a real Derby in the days when Hanover, Emperor of Norfolk. Burlington, Russell, Dobbins, Handspring, Peter Pan and others of glorious memory won it at its old-time mile and a half. Now it is a travesty on the name. The two races of the name run in Kentucky the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and the Latonia Derby returned the greatest values, were won by smashing good colts and were productive of grand and thrilling races. Two, the Latonia and American Derbys, fell prey to the speed and stamina of the western crack. Dodge. Two, the Brooklyn and Canadian Derbys, were captured by three-year-olds bred in England in Chicle and Faux-Col. The fastest time in any was George Smiths 2:01 in the Kentucky Derby.
