SHORT GRASS AND BORROW TWO VETERANS CLASH IN A FAST RACE AND THE ENGLISHMAN PREVAILS. Amoroso a Victor and Is Bid Up Sand Marsh Beaten and Pulls Up Lame Horses Shipped from Laurel to Havana. Baltimore, Md., October 20. Short Grass, the imported son of Lavcno and Outburst, racing in tlie colors of Emil Herz, showed one of the best performances of his career, Avhen he picked up 120 pounds and Avon the Dixie Handicap at Laurel this afternoon. There were only three starters and Borrow and Short Grass raced like a team for a mile and an eighth. Borrow Avas on the inside. Usually Short Grass is Avell back in the early running, but in todays contest he Avas right on top of the leader and from the start the pair ran at a fast pace. They ran to the stand in 23 and the first half in 47, Avhich is the fastest half run during the meeting. The three-quarters, in 1:12, A-ns also the fastest for that, distance. They eoA-ered the mile in 1:38, slowing up a bit while rounding the far turn, but increased their speed in the final quarter, Avith Short Grass going aAvay at the end into a comfortable lead. The mile and a quarter Avas run in 2:03, Avhich represented a, new track record for the distance. Short Grass is to be retired to the stud at the conclusion of the present racing season. He is a beautifully-bred horse. Ambrose Avas advanced from 1916.sh00 to ,105 after Avinning by some bidder unknown to the officials. He Avas retained by his owner. Sand Marsh pulled up sore after his losing race. Dr. W. II. Bucehner, owner of the fast young stallion. AVilkes Brewer, 2:0SV. and Frederick W. Schroeder Avere guests of Paul PoAvers at Laurel this afternoon. Dr. Bucehner comes from Youngs town, Ohio, the former home of Mr. Powers. He is a great lover of the horse. The first consignment of horses to leave Laurel for Cuba Avas shipped tonight and loaded on one of the Ward Line Boats for Havana. They were Libyan Sands and Delancey, Avhich Seuor Alvarez purchased from August Belmont a few days back. With these two Avent Wenonah, Avhich he purchased from Mr. II. K. Knapp and Bromerick purchased at yesterdays sale in the paddock. It is said that jockey Eddie Taplin will ride the horses that E. Burke will train for some Avealthy Cubans. Edgar Murphy and Andrew Miller Avere among the arrivals from New York this morning. They will remain o-er for the Aveck end. Wendell Cassidy, son of starter Cassidy, came over from New York to enjoy a few days of racing before the close of the meeting here. Young Cassidy is employed in a Wall street brokers otliee. The imported two-year-old Buchanan Brady, Avhich Avas bought in by his owner. H. C. Hollander at yesterdays sale, AAas afterwards disposed of at private sale to II. G. Bedwell. The colt Avill be among those Avhich Mr. Bedwell will ship from Baltimore to Cuba. A. G. Weston left this morning for Pimlicn Avith the Thomas Clyde horses. Several other owners Avill ship over on Saturdaj-. Jockey E. Ambrose. avIio has been riding in particularly good, form, lias received several flattering offers for next year. It is understood that Willis Sharpe Kilmer has some sort of a call on the lad, which has tied him up. Ambroses riding of Harvest King yesterday came in for considerable praise from the horsemen. Greentree, after winning the opening dash, Avas adA-anced from ,G00 to ,105 by Messrs. Bedwell and Herz, but Avas bought in by his owner. Mr. Herz secured Sevillian after he Avon the seventh race yesterday. Sevillian Avas entered for 00 and Avent to the Herz stable at ,500. Arrangements are being perfected for a special train to leave for HaA-ana at the conclusion of the Bowie meeting. A number of horsemen will go to Cuba before that date. James Milton, avIio is looking after the interests of the Cuba-American Jockey Club here, is prepared to quote rates to the horsemen cither via Key West or Tampa.
