GREAT RACING AT PIMLICO COLUMBINE PROVES AN EASY WINNER OF THE MILE WALDEN STAKES. Lcocharcs Distinguishes Himself in Winning Under Heavy Weight and Makes a New Track Record Brooks Junior Steeplechase. Baltimore, Md., November 4. The Maryland .Jockey Club lliis afternoon offered patrons of racing at limlieo a brilliant iirogram and, despite disagreeable weather, a large gathering turned out at the hill top course. The Walden Stakes, one of the annual fixtures of the fall meetings here, wis the star attraction. The conditions of this race called for two-year-olds to go a mile and todays running of the stake brought a field of eleven to the post. It resulted in an easy victory for G. 1. Wideners Columbine, which ran coupled with Lottery. Columbine was ridden by jockey Ambrose and followed the leaders until rounding the far turn, where she raced into an easy lead and in the stretch drew away and won in a canter. At the finish she led the Kentucky Stables imported colt Courtship by a half dozen lengths. The Walden Stakes has been run continuously since 1907, its history, in brief form, being as follows: Year. Celandria finished first, but was disqualified for fouling. Lcocharcs scored a brilliant performance in the first of the limlieo Fall Serial Handicaps, in which lie carried the steadying impost of 133 pounds. Jespite this he won with remarkable ease by a leng margin and established a new track record or the three-quarters by running the distance in 1:11. The Junior Steeplechase, which was for three-year-olds, brought a promising field of jumpers to the post and furnished an interesting contest in which Brooks, one of the J. E. Davis entry, won easily. The Brook was the only one of the eijjht starters that met with mishap. He stumbled while running on the flat after taking the twelfth fence and lost his rider. P. T. Chinn left for Kentucky this afternoon to look over his yearlings and mares before sailing for England on Saturday night. He will be absent a couple of months. Henry McDaniel will sail on the same ship with Mr. Chinn. He is going abroad to purchase some mares for Willis S. Kilmer. II. D. Brown arrived this morning from New York. He was at limlieo this afternoon, making known his plans to horsemen for the meeting at Oriental Park in Cuba. Mr. Brown announced that, if conditions warrant it, racing will be held every day during the first two weeks, which will make the meeting ninety-five days duration. Among the owners who announced their intention of shipping to Cuba was Joseph Marrone, who will send down his entire string, including J. J. Lillis, Wooden Shoes and Ambrose. The good apprentice B. Kleegor, will accompany this stable. Johu W. Pangle has taken over live of the W. F. Presgrave horses and will ship them with his own string to Havana. He will also take the apprentice W. Collins with him. Ting-a-Ling was advanced 05 over his entered price of ,000 by Oscar Lewisohn and Maxims Choice was run up .05 over his entered price by Sam Louis. Both horses were bought in. The Maryland Jockey Club issued a pamphlet tliis afteroon giving some of their plans for the season of 1917. The club is making the following statement: "With the single exception of the limlieo Nursery which is already closed and the conditions of which now cannot be altered it Is our intention to offer no races to be run iit limlieo in 1917, to which horse owners will be required to subscribe, unless it be made by a starting fee to discourage withdrawals, which would reduce fields to below the standard minimum of quality and contention." An announcement was made of a sale to be held in the paddock at limlieo on Saturday next, when Johnson Ford will dispose of seven yearlings. Mr. Gifford, A. Cochran will also send several horses into the sales ring, including the fast filly Triple Crown, Beaverkill and Handsoff. A notice was posted in the secretarys office announcing a change in the distance of the Juvenile Handicap, to be run on Thursday next, from one mile to three-quarters. J. Griffith has purchased the two-year-olds Flare and Scylla and turned them over to W. 15. Mitchell, who will take them to Cuba with the remainder of the string. Lieutenant J. K. L. Ross, the Canadian sportsman who maintains a big racing establishment, has purchased a large tract of land on the St. Lawrence River, below Montreal, where he proposes to establish a stock farm. Capt. W. F. Presgrave has purchased 150 acres adjoining this property. There is some question as to who will act as manager of the Dorval race course next season. It developes that the arrangement made by the club with Captain Presgrave was for one year only and this has not, as yet, been renewed. Among prominent arrivals this afternoon were Andrew Miller, A. K. Macomber, W. S. Fanshawe and W. r. Prymo. This mornings work-outs at Pimlico over a fast track included the following: Alvord Three-quarters in 1:20. Amalgamator Three-eighths in 38.
