NEW STEEPLECHASE RIDER OF PROMISE. The second half of the split steeplechase at Pim-lico last Friday showed up a real rider of jumping horses in Dallett Byers, who piloted Mrs. G. II. Stetsons Sixty Four to the front after riding a great race from start to finish. Byers is a boy only 19 years old, who has been exercising and schooling jumpers for J. Howard Lewis, the veteran trainer of steeplechaers, and who sent Sixty Four to the post for Mrs. Stetson. Byers, on Sixty Four, not only showed rare judgement in his riding all through the race, but when in the second time around, at the jump on the first turn, his mount hit the fence and threw him to the ground, he gave an exhibition of cowboy tactics when he held on and resinned his seat in the saddle in a way that thrilled the crowd and called forth cheers for his gaiheness and coolness. When he was thrown back several lengths by this mishap Byers never lost his head, but kept right after the two that had been leading, and when the last turn was reached he was in striking distance. Then he moved his mount up and took the lead just before the last jump was reached, after which it was easy for him to come on and win by ten lengths.
